Application Engineer

Summary: The Application Engineer (AE) is responsible for the application engineering, system design, and technical support of Building Automation Systems (BAS) and related energy solutions projects. This role partners closely with Sales Engineers and Operations leadership to develop technically sound, compliant, and constructible controls solutions from pre‑sales and estimation through project handoff. The AE focuses on controls system architecture, design documentation, submittal preparation, and technical risk mitigation, with Siemens BAS and Tridium Niagara N4 platforms as the primary technology. Experience with other BAS platforms is valued, as core controls engineering principles translate across systems.

Key Responsibilitie

sApplications Engineering & Pre-Sales Suppor

• tSupport the Controls and Energy Solutions sales team by developing Siemens BAS‑based solutions aligned with project requirements and sales objectives
• .Review mechanical, electrical, and controls drawings and specifications to fully understand project scope and design intent
• .Develop controls system architectures, including controller selection, IO requirements, network layouts, and integration approaches
• .Develop and review sequences of operation and controls narratives to ensure clarity, performance, and constructability
• .Identify technical risks, scope gaps, and design challenges early and communicate them to sales and leadership
• .Create conceptual controls drawings and system documentation using Visio and AutoCAD
• .Assist and estimate BAS projects ready for estimate reviews

.Controls System Design & Submittal

• sPerform application engineering using Siemens design tool or configurator toolsets to produce complete BAS submittal packages
• .Develop controls schematics, system diagrams, network topology diagrams, and engineering documentation
• .Generate complete bills of material (BOM) based on engineered solutions
• .Ensure designs comply with contract documents, owner standards, best practices, and applicable codes
• .Review design revisions or material deviations and communicate technical impacts to operations and leadership

.BAS Platform & Technology Expertis

• eMaintain strong working knowledge of Siemens BAS platforms, including Desigo Automation, Talon and Tridium Niagara N4
• .Maintain functional familiarity with other BAS platforms
• .Apply standard BAS communication protocols, including BACnet/IP, BACnet MS/TP, and Modbus
• .Understand BAS networking concepts, IT coordination requirements, and cybersecurity considerations
• .Stay current with product updates, firmware, and software revisions across supported platforms

.Project Support & Technical Handof

• fLead technical handoff from sales to operations, to ensure controls design intent and engineering assumptions are clearly communicated
• .Support project teams during execution by addressing technical questions and clarifying design intent
• .Assist with technical RFIs, submittal clarifications, and engineering-related issues
• .Provide engineering input to commissioning planning and system acceptance criteria
• .Support project closeout by ensuring final controls documentation and as‑built engineering deliverables accurately reflect the installed system

.Energy Solutions Support

• Support controls-related aspects of energy efficiency, optimization, and performance projects
• .Assist with utility coordination and documentation related to controls and system performance
• .Provide technical input for optimization strategies, analytics, and energy performance objective

Qualificatio

• ns5 years of experience in BAS / HVAC controls engineering, application engineering, commissioning, or a related technical rol
• e.Strong working knowledge of HVAC systems, control strategies, and DDC system desig
• n.Ability to read and interpret mechanical, electrical, and controls drawings and specification
• s.Experience developing controls system architectures, IO requirements, network layouts, and sequences of operatio
• n.Experienced and proficient in AutoC
• ADAbility to produce controls schematics, submittals, and BAS documentation packages with strong attention to detai
• l.Working knowledge of open-protocol BAS communications, including BACnet/IP, BACnet MS/TP, and Modbu
• s.Hands-on experience with BAS platforms, including Siemens Apogee, or Talon, Desigo Automation and Tridium Niagara N
• 4.Additional Experience with other BAS platforms such as, Johnson Controls Metasys, Honeywell, Schneider, ALC, or equivalent systems is preferre
