REQUIREMENTS:
Education: Bachelor’s Degree in and endorsements in the area(s) of teaching assignment with Braille Instructor Endorsement. Current/valid South Dakota Teaching Certificate.
Experience: Successful student teaching.
Physical Requirements: Constant hand-eye/mind-eye coordination. Frequent walking, keyboarding, speaking, writing, bending, carrying, pushing, pulling, sitting, and turning. Some lifting up to 30 lbs. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of this position.
Other Requirements: Excellent written and verbal communication, strategic planning, problem solving, organizational, time management, and conflict resolution skills. Computer proficiency in braille transcribing programs, word processing, spreadsheets, data entry, email, and the internet. Ability to keep information confidential.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & DUTIES:
- Responsible for organizing and implementing an instructional program for visually impaired students
- Transcribes and Adapts student materials to Literary Braille code and Nemeth code.
- Prepares tactile materials for student use.
- Instructs students in the correct usage of technology for independent use.
- Acts as sighted guide for field trips, “hands on” demonstrations, etc. to assist students in understanding concepts.
- Provides direction, encouragement, support, and clarification, as well as prompt and useful feedback.
- Assists in the implementation of orientation and mobility activities.
- Provide specialized instructional techniques to meet needs of students
- Organizes time, space, resources, and equipment for assistance in instruction.
- Maintains professional relationships with fellow teachers, administration, parents, and students.
- Participates in parent conferences and communicates with parents/guardians in regards to student progress as necessary.
- Monitors students during recess, lunchroom, study halls, and in hallways.
- Appropriately assessing students in order to assist with visual needs/accommodations/services.
- Active participant in IEP development.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
