What are the responsibilities and job description for the Full Time Deputy Sheriff position at Harper County, Kansas?
The Harper County Sheriff’s Office has an opening for a full-time Deputy Sheriff position. Our Office is looking for a professional, motivated person with strong moral character, who has an interest in protecting and serving the residents of Harper County. Applicants should possess a community-orienting policing mindset, and should possess excellent communication skills, both verbal and written. Familiarity with Microsoft word and basic typing skills are preferred but not required.
The Harper County Sheriff’s Office consists of the Sheriff, Undersheriff, Sergeant, School Resource Officer, three sworn Deputies, and 2 Reserve Deputies. Our schedule consists of set 12-hour shifts that allow a 3-day weekend off every other week. The department will pay for your attendance at the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center if not already certified, and upon completion you will receive the opportunity for further advanced training as you progress in your career as well as a pay increase.
COMPENSATION
Starting salary for uncertified Deputy Sheriff is $19.70/hr., increasing to $20.29/hr. after completion of the police academy and probationary period. Lateral applicants will be paid dependent on qualifications, years of experience and other certifications with a general pay range from $19.70 to $22.17.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS
Experience: One year of similar experience is preferred. This employee is expected to have acquired the necessary information and skills to perform skills reasonably well within one year of employment.
Education: A high school diploma or GED is required. This position requires graduation from the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center, or from a reciprocating law enforcement training center and a valid Kansas Driver’s License.
Technical Skills: A thorough knowledge of all federal, state and local laws, computers, investigative techniques, first aid, and firearms. This employee must be able to efficiently operate, computers, firearms, patrol vehicles, radar, equipment, cameras, and other law enforcement equipment.
Problem Solving and Decision Making: Problem solving and decision making are a factor in this position. This employee encounters problems on a daily basis. This employee makes decisions about investigation of criminal activity, use of force, making arrests, and performing daily duties in the safest and most efficient manner.
