What are the responsibilities and job description for the Director of Public & Private Cloud position at Harnham?
Location: Dallas, TX (5 days per week onsite)
Level: Director
Reporting Line: Senior Technology Executive
Base Salary: Competitive base, targeting ~$250,000
A large, engineering‑led organisation is seeking a Director of Public & Private Cloud to take full ownership of its cloud platform strategy. This role is responsible for unifying private cloud and public cloud capabilities and driving execution across a mature, global infrastructure environment.
The organisation operates at meaningful scale, supports mission‑critical enterprise and product workloads, and is making significant long‑term investments in modern cloud platforms and open‑source technology.
The Role
This position leads the Public & Private Cloud Engineering organisation and has end‑to‑end accountability for cloud strategy, delivery, and operational excellence. You will inherit established teams across SRE, DevOps, and platform engineering that are technically strong but currently fragmented.
The mandate is clear: bring private and public cloud together into a single, coherent platform and turn strategy into execution. This is not a hands‑on architecture role. It is a senior leadership position focused on direction, delivery, and influence.
Key Responsibilities
- Own the full private and public cloud remit, reporting directly to a senior technology leader
- Lead a distributed organisation of 50–100 engineers, senior managers, and directors across the US and India
- Unify siloed private and public cloud teams into a single, connected platform organisation
- Drive execution of cloud strategy — ensuring platforms are built, delivered, and adopted
- Influence and steer highly senior architects and technical leaders without doing the design yourself
- Build trust, autonomy, and accountability within a large, established engineering group
- Oversee and evolve:
- Compute, GPU, and storage platforms
- Kubernetes and container infrastructure
- Private cloud and internal IaaS platforms
- Public cloud estates (AWS and other providers)
- Maintain focus on reliability, cost awareness, scalability, and operational excellence
Must‑Haves
- 12 years in cloud, infrastructure, platform, or private cloud engineering
- 5 years leading managers and senior technical leaders
- Demonstrated ownership of both private and public cloud environments
- Deep private cloud experience with strong public cloud exposure across at least two of AWS, Azure, or GCP
- Strong Infrastructure‑as‑Code experience (Terraform, Ansible, Python, or equivalents)
- Proven delivery of self‑service infrastructure platforms or internal cloud/IaaS products
- Solid grounding in networking, security, identity, and distributed systems
- Credibility with senior engineers and architects in complex environments
- A clear track record of turning strategy into execution
Nice to Have
- Leadership experience with OpenShift or upstream Kubernetes
- Delivery of private cloud platforms with GUI or portal‑based interfaces
- SRE, DevOps, or Internal Developer Platform (IDP) background
- Exposure to GPU‑heavy, AI/ML, or high‑performance infrastructure workloads
Why Join
- Ownership of a true private and public cloud mandate — not one or the other
- Opportunity to build a modern, open‑source‑driven cloud platform largely from the ground up
- Real engineering depth, scale, and long‑term organisational commitment
- Direct influence over cloud strategy at enterprise level
- Stable environment focused on execution rather than constant transformation
- Competitive director‑level base salary, with additional long‑term incentives aligned to impact and performance
