Regional Transportation Manager
Harms Oil is a trusted leading petroleum distributor serving the northern Midwest as a main supplier of gasoline, fuel, lubricants, and renewable fuels. Office locations are based in Brookings, SD; Sioux Falls, SD; Omaha, NE; Des Moines, IA; and Aberdeen, SD.
Harms Oil is seeking a strong, operationally minded transportation leader based in the Brookings or Sioux Falls, SD area.
Position Summary:
This position is primarily responsible for the leadership of assigned transport drivers and responding to the ongoing needs of the fleet. Promote and maintain the Company's safety culture through training, coaching, and leading by example. Recruit, hire, and retain drivers within the assigned geography. Perform on-going periodic dispatching activities as often as one week a month.
Key Responsibilities:
• Manage and execute driver recruiting, selection, and retention in the assigned geography.
• Maintain service and safety standards by ensuring that drivers are properly trained on standards and procedures while also monitoring driver compliance with regulations.
• Perform supervisory functions including driver coaching, driver performance metrics, and bonus programs, improve safety, efficiency, and identify and deliver training needs.
• Learn and effectively dispatch full-time as part of onboarding and then continue to provide periodic dispatching activities approximately one week per month and/or as busy operational times demand.
• Monitor and manage fleet utilization and workforce levels of the region of responsibility; review and analyze freight data to identify cost savings.
• Understand equipment operation and perform deliveries when needed.
• Monitor and manage incidents, including documentation, investigation, and follow-up to ensure closure and root cause analysis. Travel to the location of the incident and provide on-site management.
• Respond to changing driver schedules, vehicle emergencies, and driver phone calls.
• Ensure compliance with all DOT driver requirements.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
• 5 years of transportation management and industry experience working in similar operations and responsibilities.
• Some driving experience with a current Class A CDL with Tanker and Hazmat endorsements is highly preferred.
• Working knowledge of DOT rules and regulations related to fleet operations, driver qualifications, hours of service, FMCSA, hazmat, etc.
• An ability to work independently, relying on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish tasks.
• Ability to multitask with conflicting priorities in a pressured environment while still maintaining a customer-oriented demeanor.
• Knowledge of electronic transportation platforms and software.
• Knowledge of Microsoft Office Skills (i.e., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook).
• Work flexible hours and willing to travel, including overnight, within the region to respond to operational needs in real-time.
