What are the responsibilities and job description for the Pet Care Technician position at Harmony Pet Resort?
The following is a list of major duties and responsibilities for this position along with certain supportive duties to ensure our guests are Safe, Happy & Healthy. This is not all-inclusive. Other duties and responsibilities may be added as needed.
RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES
Key Responsibilities
- Animal Care & Feeding: Prepare and dispense individually portioned meals according to each pet's dietary requirements and owner instructions. Monitor eating habits and promptly report any changes or concerns.
- Medication Administration: Accurately administer oral, topical, or other prescribed medications as directed by veterinarians or pet owners. Maintain precise medication logs, dosage records, and timing schedules. Safely handle prescription diets, supplements, and special treatments.
- Health & Safety Monitoring: Observe animals for signs of illness, injury, or distress and communicate findings to management. Follow established sanitation protocols to prevent disease transmission.
- Facility Care: Clean and disinfect kennels, play yards, feeding areas, and equipment according to facility standards. Assist with laundry, waste removal, and general upkeep of the property.
- Document care notes accurately in the facility's management system.
Dog Handling
- Interact with dogs in playgroups using appropriate toys and tools to ensure safe levels of play and minimizing stress levels of all dogs in playgroup.
- Maintain visual observations of dogs at tall times and spread attention and play among all dogs in playgroup.
- Control level of play by following dog management and control procedures and instructions provided by management.
- Use proper dog handling techniques, introductions procedures and correction methods as instructed by management.
- Ensure you know all dogs in playgroup and can properly identify them. If not, request assistance from other staff or management.
- Watch all new dogs carefully and immediately consult with management if you have concerns.
- For all dogs in playgroup, report any unusual behavior, or eliminations and injuries to management immediately.
- Ensure that all staff that relieve you for break or shift change know all the dogs in group, the special needs dog status and any unusual behaviors or concerns you have been managing during your shift.
Cleaning & Organization
- Discard pet stools ad record each pet's elimination habits.
- Clean and sanitize water bowls, play equipment and other toys.
- Clean and sanitize all pet enclosures, exercise yards and common areas.
- Assist in maintaining cleanliness throughout the facility including cleaning dog beds, bathing, feeding, etc.
- Mix and use disinfectants and other chemicals safely as instructed by shift lead.
- Organization and time management in strong thorough cleaning skills.
Other
- Keep a working 2-way radio at all times when managing dogs. Request back-up coverage prior to leaving the playgroup floor.
- Follow all company procedures.
- Ensure daily tasks are completed on schedule and accurately.
QUALIFICATIONS
Experience
- Minimum 1 year of professional experience in a pet care environment (boarding, veterinary clinic, shelter, or grooming facility).
- Demonstrated skill in dispensing and administering medications (oral, topical, and/or injectable) safely and accurately.
- Working knowledge of animal behavior, basic health indicators, and safe animal handling techniques.
- Excellent communication and record-keeping skills.
- Preferred Veterinary assistant/technician experience or formal animal care training.
- Pet first aid/CPR certification.
- Pay commensurate with experience.
Physical Requirements
- Stand/walk for extended periods, and work indoors/outdoors in varying weather.
- Lift 50-75lbs.
- Ability to physically manage and handle large dogs.
- Bend and lift several times per day.
- Walk regularly throughout the day.
- Work around pet hair and dander.
- Open to work all holidays and weekends year-round.
