Direct Support Professional (DSP) – IDD Services
The Direct Support Professional (DSP) provides person-centered, hands-on support to individuals with intellectual or developmental disabilities (IDD) in compliance with Mississippi Department of Mental Health (DMH) Operational Standards. DSPs promote independence, ensure health and safety, support community integration, maintain accurate documentation, and protect individual rights and dignity.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide support and skill development based on the Plan of Services and Supports (PSS).
- Assist with activities of daily living, communication, socialization, and community participation.
- Ensure health and safety through personal care, monitoring changes, emergency response, and incident reporting.
- Support community outings, appointments, employment, and access to community resources.
- Complete daily documentation including service notes, data collection, and incident reports.
- Maintain confidentiality and comply with HIPAA, DMH standards, and agency policies.
- Protect individual rights and report abuse, neglect, or exploitation immediately.
- Collaborate with supervisors, QIDPs, nurses, therapists, and interdisciplinary team members.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED.
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Ability to read, write, and follow instructions.
- Completion of all DMH-required training (CPR/First Aid, Rights, Confidentiality, Abuse/Neglect, MANDT).
- Clear background check.
- Valid Mississippi driver’s license if transporting individuals.
- IDD or residential/community-based experience preferred.
Work Environment & Expectations
DSPs work in residential, day program, and community-based settings. Physical activity is required, including lifting and mobility assistance. Evening, weekend, and holiday shifts may be required. DSPs must remain attentive, dependable, professional, and committed to person-centered values.
Pay: $12.00 - $14.00 per hour
Education:
- High school or equivalent (Required)
Experience:
- working with individuals with developmental disabilities: 1 year (Required)
License/Certification:
- Driver's License (Required)
- BLS Certification (Preferred)
- American Heart Association BLS Certification (Required)
- American Heart Association Heartsaver Certification (Preferred)
- American Red Cross BLS Certification (Preferred)
- CPI BLS Certification (Preferred)
- HSI BLS CERTIFICATION (Preferred)
- BACKGROUND CHECK (Required)
