Position Summary:
The Director of People and Culture provides visionary human resources leadership to strengthen the organization’s internal culture, processes, and procedures. The field of harm reduction is led by a diverse community of people with lived experience, generational trauma, and unique needs all while working in a high-stress, complex, and emotional environment to provide necessary services to our community. This position ensures that staff feel supported, valued, and aligned with the organization’s mission, while building foundational human sources structure from the ground up. In this role, you will implement practices to support our staff and maintain a work culture that promotes self-care. Our ideal candidate has a deep commitment to harm reduction and experience in human resources and operational support and has the experience and direction to build this role.
Key Responsibilities:
Human Resources
· Lead initiatives that promote a healthy, inclusive, and culturally grounded workplace culture, including the creation of a Human Resources for Harm Reduction guide on policies and procedures
· Oversee recruitment, onboarding, and retention strategies that reflect organizational values and community priorities
· Develop and document job requirements and ensure that job descriptions for all positions are legally compliant and regularly updated
· Work with Executive Director, Deputy Director, and other members of leadership to create equitable compensation packages for staff
· Ensure accurate administration of employee benefits and human resources compliance
· Monitors and collaborates with other organizational leaders to ensure the organization’s compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations, and recommended best practices; reviews and modifies policies and practices to maintain compliance
· Partner with leadership to ensure policies and practices align with cultural values, equity, and community respect
· Work with supervisors to facilitate performance reviews and create feedback opportunities
· Maintain legal employment records and work to maintain reasonable consistency among all records
· Facilitate payroll processing transactions and updates including salaries, benefits, garnishments, taxes, and other deductions, as well as new hires, terminations, and changes to pay rates
· Provide operational support of contractor/consultant engagements, supporting contract negotiations as well as acting as point of contact during contract execution; manage vendor partnerships and relationships and track agreements and contracts
· Lead recognition and appreciation initiatives that honor staff contributions and foster belonging
· Support professional development, mentorship, and staff well-being programs
· Develop and maintain internal communication systems that enhance transparency, collaboration, and staff engagement
· Guide managers and teams in conflict resolution, change management, and relationship-building practices
· Actively build familiarity with each team’s roles, responsibilities, and ongoing projects to ensure informed support and effective collaboration across the organization
· Work closely with staff to understand their day‑to‑day work, strengths, and challenges, ensuring decisions are grounded in real experiences and team needs
· Performs other duties as assigned
Leadership & Organizational Strategy
· Serve as a member of the executive leadership team, contributing to organizational vision, planning, and culture
· Work with the Board’s executive committee to make recommendations, review and update organizational policies; support the management team and staff in application of policies
· Provide guidance on diversity, equity, inclusion, and cultural awareness across all operations
· Integrate staff and community feedback into strategic planning and continuous improvement
· Supervise and mentor staff in communications, human resources, and engagement roles
· Monitor and evaluate the impact of people and culture initiatives, providing regular updates to leadership
Requirements:
Skills and Qualifications
- A commitment to harm reduction-centered values including a commitment to ongoing anti-racist work
- Reliable with tracking due dates
- Strong project management, time management, and planning skills, with a demonstrated ability to take initiative and drive projects forward independently
- Knowledge of the payroll function including preparation, balancing, internal control, and payroll taxes
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $70,000.00 per year
