Harlem School of the Arts seeks a passionate, experienced Summer Camp Health Director to manage its annual arts summer camp at the Herb Alpert Center in Harlem. The Harlem Summer Arts Experience celebrates Harlem’s rich history and the interdisciplinary approach to learning by offering age-appropriate activity sessions from all five disciplines: music, dance, theater, visual arts, and musical theater. The ideal candidate is familiar with health and safety protocols in compliance with New York City Department of Health guidelines and is experienced working with young children. The Harlem Summer Arts Experience 2026 will run from July 6 through August 14, 2026.
This is a seasonal position from mid-June through August 14, 2026. For the duration of camp (six weeks, July 6 through August 14), this is a full-time schedule from 7:30 AM to 4:30 PM Monday through Friday. We are seeking someone to fulfill the entire length of the role.
General Responsibilities:
The Summer Camp Health Director is the primary health care professional for the camp. The Director is responsible for carrying out all first aid supervision and addressing any medical concerns with campers during the summer camp. The Health Director will be a primary consultant in camp COVID-19 safety protocols, alongside the Camp Director and the Chief Officers for operations and programming. The Health Director supports camp staff in providing campers a safe, fun, and educational experience in a supportive environment. The position reports to the Summer Camp Director.
Essential Functions:
- Knowledge of and attention to all rapidly changing CDC and New York State guidelines surrounding COVID-19 protocol to keep campers, staff, and families as safe as possible.
- Be an agent of safety for all campers and staff. This includes taking responsibility for one’s own well-being and the well-being of others. Assist in COVID-19 wellness screenings and health related concerns.
- Know the proper safety measures and necessary action to take in the event of an emergency.
- Keep an accurate inventory of all supplies ensuring first aid supplies are always functional and stocked.
- Work directly with campers in need of extra assistance and communicate with Camp Director on a regular basis regarding camper needs. Implement action plans with appropriate staff when needed.
- Attend all required pre-camp trainings.
- Actively participate in training sessions, designated meetings, and special events.
- Ensure all camper issues are handled and recorded in a timely and effective manner.
- Ensure parent communication is handled in a timely and professional manner.
- Ensure program staff and patrons maintain hygiene habits/practices in accordance with CDC guidelines.
- Attend weekly camp staff meetings remotely leading up to the start of the camp.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree in a related field
- Nurse practitioner, Physician's assistant, Registered nurse, LPN, EMT( must have advanced First Aid by American Red Cross) and (2) a current certification in an *acceptable CPR training program (e.g. CPR Pro by American Red Cross)
- Basic understanding of child psychology, communication styles, and behavioral needs
- CPR Professional Rescuers certifications, or approved equivalent, required
- Advanced First Aid certification required
- Strong communication and relationship building skills
- Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social, economic, and emotional segments of the community
- Ability to work in a fast paced, highly flexible and rapidly changing work environment
- Must be fully vaccinated according to CDC guidelines having received at least the primary series of COVID-19 vaccines
Schedule:
- Camp Preparation Hours: To be determined. Limited hours (5-10 hours/weekly) starting mid-June 2026.
- Camp Hours: Monday to Friday, 7:30 AM to 4:30 PM starting July 6 through August 14, 2026
