What are the responsibilities and job description for the Advanced Automotive Technician position at Hargett Automotive?
Advanced Automotive Technician
Hargett Automotive & Performance, Evansville, IN
Monday–Friday - 7:30am - 5:30pm (No Weekends)
$100,000 Earning Potential (Base Pay Production Bonus)
Overview:
Hargett is a small, family owned shop where the owners are directly involved in the business, decisions are made in-house, and technicians have a voice in how the shop operates. The team starts each morning together to go over the day's workload, talks openly about problems that came up the previous week, and makes changes when something isn't working. Leadership is hands on and transparent, with clear expectations but enough trust for experienced people to do their jobs.
This opportunity is built for the technician who likes figuring things out. Someone who still gets satisfaction from finding the cause of an electrical, drivability, or intermittent problem instead of replacing parts until the light goes away. You should be comfortable working independently, but also experienced enough that another technician can come to you when they hit a wall.
Pay & Benefits:
Experienced technicians at Hargett have the opportunity to earn $100,000 per year, depending on experience, qualifications, and productivity. The compensation structure begins with a base and rewards technicians as productivity levels are achieved. There are also additional incentives for ASE certifications and continuing education.
Benefits include:
- Health, dental, and vision insurance
- 401(k) with Traditional and Roth options, plus a 50% match on the first 6%
- 7 paid holidays (also closed the entire week of Thanksgiving)
- Paid time off that increases with tenure
- Company-provided uniforms
- Paid continuing education and certification opportunities
- Additional pay for ASE certifications
- $1/hour continuing education incentive after completing 10 training hours per quarter
And there are some benefits that don't fit neatly into a compensation package. Every Monday starts with a company-provided breakfast and employee meeting. On Tuesdays, the entire team goes out for an extended lunch. The shop also does cookouts, team activities, and brings the entire team to the Performance Racing Industry Show in Indianapolis, covering registration, hotel, food, and a team-building activity.
What We Do Here:
Hargett isn't a shop where every day is brakes, oil changes, and tire rotations.
The shop works on just about everything, including domestic, Asian, European, light-duty diesel, classic vehicles, daily drivers, fleets, and performance cars. EV work is currently limited.
A typical workload for this position is expected to be roughly:
- 40% mechanical repair
- 40% testing and diagnostics
- 20% maintenance
Daily car count is relatively low at around 3 to 5 vehicles, but that is because Hargett regularly takes on larger and more involved jobs that other shops may not. You may see everything from a normal commuter car to something high-end or heavily modified in the same week.
Performance experience is not required for this position. If that side of the industry interests you, however, there is plenty of opportunity to be around it. One of the six bays houses a chassis dyno, we are active in drag racing and the Drag-N-Drive community, and the shop hosts an annual car show, burnout contest, and dyno shootout.
The Shop - Tools, Equipment & Shop Environment:
Both the front office and shop are heated and air conditioned, and each technician has access to their own iPad, computer, and diagnostic station.
Shop equipment includes:
- Hunter alignment rack
- Multiple Snap-on scan tools
- Autel diagnostic equipment
- Factory Ford scanner
- Chassis dyno
- Specialty tools provided by the shop
- Tekmetric shop-management system
- Tekmetric digital vehicle inspections on every vehicle
Technicians are expected to provide their own basic hand tools.
The shop also gives technicians a clear picture of their workload. Repair orders include billed hours and a targeted completion time, giving you useful information for managing your own day rather than wondering what the expectation is.
Who We Are Looking For:
Diagnostics Matter Here
This is not a code-reader position.
Hargett is looking for someone comfortable building a diagnostic strategy from actual test results. That means being able to use scan data, wiring diagrams, a DVOM, bi-directional controls, and advanced testing equipment to determine what failed and why.
You should be comfortable diagnosing:
- Electrical and wiring concerns
- Drivability problems
- Intermittent or difficult-to-reproduce issues
- Starting and charging systems
- Sensors and actuators
- CAN/LIN network and communication issues
- Module concerns
- Engine performance problems
Experience with oscilloscopes, pressure transducers, or similar advanced diagnostic equipment is highly valuable.
Mechanical ability matters just as much. The position includes brakes, steering and suspension, cooling systems, driveline and transmission R&R, timing components, cylinder head and head gasket work, external engine components, and advanced engine diagnosis.
What You Bring To The Table:
This position is intended for an experienced, advanced-level technician, not someone who still needs daily supervision.
You should have:
- At least 3 years of professional automotive technician experience, with 5 years strongly preferred
- Strong mechanical repair experience
- Advanced diagnostic and electrical ability
- The ability to interpret live scan data independently
- Confidence using a DVOM and wiring diagrams
- Experience diagnosing drivability and intermittent problems
- Ability to operate scan tools and perform vehicle programming or software updates
- Ability to work independently from diagnosis through completed repair
- A willingness to help guide other technicians when they get stuck
- Basic personal hand tools
- A dependable, team-oriented approach
ASE Master Technician certification is preferred, but not required. Technicians who do not currently hold the required ASE certifications will need to obtain them within six months of employment, with continuing education supported by Hargett.
Continued Education:
Nobody in this industry knows everything, and Hargett doesn't expect you to stop learning once you're experienced.
The shop regularly coordinates training both onsite and offsite, pays for continuing education, takes advantage of vendor training, and attends PRI each year. Technicians can also earn additional compensation for maintaining ASE certifications and completing continuing education.
There is also room to grow beyond your own bay. Experienced technicians interested in leadership can work with ownership to create a path toward becoming a lead technician or another position within the company.
If you're the technician people already come looking for when the easy answer didn't fix the car, but you still want a shop where people know your name, your input matters, and there's something interesting waiting in the next bay, Hargett Automotive & Performance is worth a conversation.
