What are the responsibilities and job description for the Tax Lead position at Hare CPAs?
This isn’t a replacement position.
It’s a leadership hire in the next chapter of Hare CPAs.
We’ve built a successful firm by delivering exceptional technical work and developing trusted relationships with our clients. Today, demand for our services continues to grow—but like many founder-led firms, we’ve reached a point where capacity, not opportunity, is our greatest constraint.
We’re looking for someone who wants to help us build what comes next. Not someone looking for another tax management position. Someone who wants to build the tax department they always wished they had the opportunity to lead.
Our Purpose
Building stronger businesses and fuller lives.
That’s why we exist. Tax returns, financial statements, and compliance are important. But they’re not the destination. They’re the foundation that allows business owners to make better decisions, reduce risk, build wealth, create opportunities for their employees, and ultimately build better businesses and better lives. Just as importantly, we believe the success of our clients begins with the growth of our own people. We are committed to creating an environment where our team members can develop their talents, pursue meaningful careers, and build fuller lives alongside the clients they serve.
If you’re passionate about helping businesses thrive, developing people to reach their potential, and using your expertise to create lasting impact, you’ll feel at home at Hare CPAs.
Who You’ll Serve
We intentionally work with clients who value expertise, seek trusted advice, and want long-term relationships—not just tax returns. Our ideal clients are privately held construction contractors and professional service businesses, particularly specialty dental and high-income dental practices, with 15 to 150 employees and complex financial needs. They look to us for tax planning, business strategy, cash flow, forecasting, succession planning, and better decision-making throughout the year. We choose to partner with growth-minded business owners who appreciate thoughtful guidance, invest in their businesses, and want an advisor who helps them build stronger businesses and fuller lives.
Why This Role Exists
To get there, we need a tax department that delivers exceptional technical work while continuously improving how tax services are delivered. The Tax Lead is a critical leadership position making that vision a reality.
Your mission is straightforward: Build a tax department that no longer depends on one person. That means developing people, improving systems, leveraging technology, creating technical excellence, and building an environment where clients receive extraordinary value regardless of who is serving them.
What You’ll Build
You’ll help build a tax department that:
- Delivers exceptional technical work.
- Identifies opportunities—not just tax liabilities.
- Develops outstanding tax professionals.
- Uses technology to eliminate repetitive work.
- Creates systems that become stronger every year.
- Gives clients confidence through thoughtful advice and clear communication.
- Supports the firm’s advisory strategy rather than simply completing compliance work.
How You’ll Lead
Obsess Over Client Success: Our work starts with the client’s goals and works backward.
You’ll help clients make better decisions by:
- Identifying proactive tax planning opportunities.
- Recognizing opportunities within entity structures, ownership, succession planning, and business strategy.
- Translating complicated tax concepts into practical business advice.
- Building relationships where clients naturally call you before they make important decisions.
Success isn’t measured by the number of returns completed. Success is measured by the value clients receive because of your work.
Think Long-Term: We’re not hiring someone to solve next busy season. We’re hiring someone to help shape the next decade of Hare CPAs. You’ll:
- Build systems that continue improving long after today’s projects are finished.
- Develop future leaders within the tax department.
- Help create a scalable tax operation that supports the firm’s long-term advisory strategy.
- Contribute to a culture that values continuous learning and sustainable growth.
Invent Better Ways: We believe technology should eliminate repetitive work—not relationships, judgment, or critical thinking. We’re looking for someone who naturally asks: “What can we reinvent, borrow from the outside, or simplify dramatically to create better outcomes for our customers and our business?
You’ll have the opportunity to:
- Improve tax workflows.
- Implement automation.
- Improve review processes.
- Enhance technical consistency.
- Build systems that improve quality, efficiency, profitability, and the client experience.
If you’ve built something valuable before and weren’t fully recognized for it, we’d like to hear your story.
Operate With Excellence: Technical ability is expected. Excellence is much bigger than that. You’ll lead by:
- Producing technically outstanding work.
- Reviewing returns with the goal of developing people—not simply correcting mistakes.
- Communicating clearly and confidently.
- Picking up the phone when a conversation creates a better outcome than another email.
- Taking ownership from beginning to end.
- Building trust through reliability, responsiveness, and accountability.
Grow People Into Their Potential: One of the most important responsibilities in this role isn’t preparing returns. It’s helping people become better than they thought they could become. You’ll:
- Mentor Associates and Seniors.
- Coach future technical leaders.
- Create a learning environment built on patience, trust, and high expectations.
- Help people develop confidence—not dependence.
Your greatest accomplishment won’t be the returns you review. It will be the people who become exceptional because you invested in them.
Technical Leadership
You’ll serve as one of the firm’s technical leaders by:
- Acting as the in-charge on a significant portion of business tax engagements.
- Serving as technical reviewer on the remaining business tax work.
- Resolving complex tax issues while exercising sound judgment regarding escalation.
- Leading tax research and technical guidance.
- Working with corporate, S corporation, individual, multistate, partnership, trust, estate, and gift taxation.
- Supporting tax planning, entity structure reviews, succession planning, and business advisory discussions.
Help Grow the Firm
We believe business development is a byproduct of creating exceptional value and building trusted relationships.
As a Tax Lead, you’ll play an important role in the continued growth of Hare CPAs by:
- Building meaningful relationships with clients, referral partners, and professionals in our communities.
- Representing the firm through networking events, industry associations, and community involvement.
- Identifying opportunities to deepen existing client relationships through proactive advice and planning.
- Creating thought leadership through presentations, articles, webinars, or educational events.
- Helping prospective clients understand how Hare CPAs creates value beyond compliance.
- Contributing ideas that strengthen our reputation, expand our relationships, and support the firm’s long-term growth.
We’re not looking for someone who enjoys selling. We’re looking for someone who enjoys building trust, sharing knowledge, and creating opportunities through genuine relationships.
How You Know You Might Be Ready For This Leadership Position …..
We’re less interested in years of experience than the impact you’ve created. Examples include:
- People consistently seek your technical guidance.
- Clients trust your recommendations.
- You’ve improved systems or workflows.
- You’ve introduced technology that created measurable value.
- You’ve developed people who became stronger because of your coaching.
- You’ve created planning opportunities others overlooked.
- You’ve earned a reputation for technical excellence, integrity, sound judgment, and humility.
CPA, MST with EA or JD required.
Experience with UltraTax and Thomson Reuters Checkpoint is beneficial.
What Success Looks Like After One Year
You’ll know you’re succeeding when:
- The Shareholder is no longer the firm’s default technical reviewer.
- The tax department operates with greater confidence, consistency, and accountability.
- Staff members grow faster because of your coaching.
- Clients increasingly seek your advice.
- AI and automation have meaningfully improved efficiency.
- Planning opportunities become a natural outcome of every engagement.
- The compliance engine creates capacity for the firm’s advisory strategy to continue growing.
Where This Can Lead
This role was created with the future in mind. The right leader won’t remain a Tax Lead forever. As Hare CPAs continues to grow, this role is expected to evolve into Director-level leadership and may ultimately become a Partner opportunity for someone who consistently demonstrates leadership, technical excellence, innovation, client stewardship, and a commitment to helping others succeed.
A Final Thought
The right person for this role probably isn’t actively looking for a new position. They’re likely respected where they are. They’re doing meaningful work, but they may also be wondering whether they’ll ever have the opportunity to truly build something instead of simply maintaining it.
If you’ve ever thought, “I know how a tax department could be better.” We’d welcome a confidential conversation.
No pressure.
No expectations.
Just an opportunity to explore whether we’re the right place to build something meaningful together.
