What are the responsibilities and job description for the Health Information Records Specialist position at Harbor Brand?
Harbor is seeking a Health Information Records Specialist to join the Toledo team! This position requires a strong understanding of health/medical records disclosure rules, a high ability to maintain confidentiality, keen attention to detail and excellent organizational skills.
Position is full-time, 40 hours per week.
Education/Experience/Other Requirements:
- High school diploma or GED required. Associates degree in health information management or health information administration preferred; or a minimum of 3 years of experience with data entry and health/medical records processing and maintenance required.
- RHIA or RHIT Certification preferred.
- Strong understanding of HIPAA and privacy laws and ability to handle sensitive information and meet confidentiality laws/regulations.
- Excellent attention to detail and ability to communicate clearly and effectively with a variety of people and be a team player required.
- Flexibility, excellent organizational and computer skills are also required.
- Must be proficient and accurate in computer use, including Microsoft Word and Excel.
Essential Job Competencies/Primary Duties:
- Pulls records, prints/copies, tracks and sends releases of confidential information in accordance with Harbor policies and procedures.
- Ensures security and confidentiality of health/medical records.
- Reviews records disclosure requests for required elements and validity.
- Formulates and initiates an action plan for records disclosure based upon validity of the disclosure authorization and information requested.
- Works collaboratively with clinical leaders and staff for compliance and clinical sign-off of records, as appropriate.
- Initiates and completes reports verifying requests for information have been completed.
- Scans and attaches documents to electronic medical records, according to Harbor procedures and guidelines.
- Performs daily operations such as copying, faxing, distributing records, answering, and responding to phone calls.
- Provides quality and timely support to both internal and external customers and strives for customer satisfaction.
- Attends staff meetings as appropriate and serves on agency committees as assigned.
- Keeps current with trends and developments related to health/medical record disclosure, essential job competencies, and demonstrates continued growth.
- Accepts and completes other duties as assigned.
