What are the responsibilities and job description for the Kennel Technician position at Happy Life Animal Rescue?
About Us
Happy Life Animal Rescue is a 501(c)(3) foster-based nonprofit serving the Hudson Valley and tri-state area. We've been saving lives for over 10 years, with nearly 3,000 animals adopted and a 98% live release rate. Our small but dedicated team works hard every day to give homeless animals a second chance.
The Role
We're looking for a reliable, animal-loving Kennel Technician to join our team. This is a hands-on, shift-based position caring for the animals in our kennel facility. No two days are exactly the same, but every day matters. Dogs and cats always need care — this role includes weekday, weekend, and holiday shifts.
Shift Schedule
- Sunday–Friday: 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM and 5:00 PM – 8:00 PM (split shift)
- Saturday: 8:00 AM – 11:00 AM and 4:00 PM – 7:00 PM (split shift)
Shifts include weekdays, weekends, and holidays. Schedules are assigned based on availability and staffing needs.
What You'll Do
- Feed, water, and provide daily care for dogs and cats in the kennel
- Clean and sanitize kennels, cages, and common areas
- Perform facility housekeeping including sweeping, mopping, and general upkeep
- Record animal observations, feedings, and health findings in daily logs
- Maintain enrichment logs and provide daily enrichment activities for animals
- Monitor animals for signs of illness or behavioral changes and report concerns promptly
- Administer basic medications as directed
- Assist with laundry and supply restocking
- Help with animal intake and transport as needed
- Interact with and socialize animals to support their well-being and adoptability
What We're Looking For
- Genuine love for animals and a commitment to their welfare
- Dependable — you show up, on time, ready to work
- Willing and available to work weekdays, weekends, and holidays as needed
- Comfortable handling dogs of all sizes and temperaments, from small breeds to large/strong dogs
- Able to lift 50 lbs independently (e.g., dog food bags, supplies)
- Comfortable with physical work — you'll be on your feet, bending, lifting, and cleaning throughout your shift
- A team player who communicates well and supports their coworkers
- Detail-oriented when it comes to logging and record-keeping
- Previous animal care or shelter experience is a plus but not required — we'll train the right person
