JOB SUMMARY: JOB SUMMARY: Happy Hollow Children’s Camp hosts 8 weeks of overnight camp for children ages 7-17. We serve campers regardless of their life circumstances, and over 90% of our campers receive our highest level of financial support.

We seek enthusiastic, responsible, and creative Equine Instructors to provide our campers with a safe and memorable experience. The Equestrian Instructor is responsible for teaching campers the basics of safe horseback riding and leading them on rides in the ring or on the lower trail during each week of camp. Instructor duties include supervising campers during activities, overseeing meals, showers, and bedtime. Instructors will also be responsible for having a group of campers or floating between cabins to help out with campers. Instructors are required to reside on camp property overnight 5 days a week. Instructors are provided with free lodging and 14 meals during the week.

QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS:

  • College student or at least 19 years of age
  • Documented experience in teaching western horseback riding
  • At least 1-2 years of youth leadership experience preferred
  • Desire and ability to work with children outdoors
  • Ability to teach horseback riding skills to other staff members and campers
  • Ability to accept supervision and feedback
  • Good character, integrity, and ability to adapt to a camp setting
  • Enthusiasm, sense of humor, patience, and self-control
  • Physical ability to participate in strenuous activities (hiking, swimming, climbing)
  • First Aid/CPR certification (camp will provide)
  • Ability to pass a background check

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Abide by all camp rules
  • Successfully complete pre-camp staff training
  • Assume complete responsibility and supervision for all horse’s well-being and equipment
  • Set up a horseback program during staff training to include a program of progression to teach horse safety, horse anatomy, horsemanship, use of equipment, and riding skills
  • Do a pre camp inspection during staff training to include inventory, rules, lesson plans, equipment inspection, barn inspection, and cleaning
  • Set up a feeding schedule for all horses
  • Teach and monitor proper use of equipment
  • When instructor is not present, ensure that the feed room and tack room are securely locked
  • Conduct orientation to all new participants that include rules, safety procedures and proper use of equipment
  • Plan alternate programs to be used in inclement weather
  • Keep horse arena and barn clean and orderly
  • Inform the Camp Director of needed supplies, preferably one week in advance (feed, fly spray)
  • Submit to Camp Director, weekly evaluation of horse program
  • Prepare achievement recognition awards
  • Assist in organizing and conducting other camp activities
  • Assist with camper supervision in the cabin, at meals, bedtime, on duty, and all-camp activities
  • Ensure all equipment is properly inventoried, cleaned and stored at the end of camp
  • Other duties as assigned
