What are the responsibilities and job description for the Irrigation Technician position at HAPA LANDSCAPING?
Irrigation Technician
Full-time | $25–$35/hour | Waimānalo, Oʻahu | In-person
We are looking for an experienced Irrigation Technician to join our landscape team and take ownership of the installation, troubleshooting, repair, and ongoing maintenance of irrigation systems across Oʻahu.
This is a hands-on position for someone who understands irrigation beyond simply replacing sprinkler heads. The right candidate can diagnose problems, identify the root cause, make effective repairs, and recommend improvements that increase system performance and water efficiency.
If you have strong mechanical ability, experience working with irrigation systems, and the confidence to work independently in the field, we'd like to hear from you.
What You'll Do
- Install, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair drip, sprinkler, and underground irrigation systems.
- Diagnose irrigation problems including leaks, broken or clogged components, inadequate coverage, pressure issues, electrical/control problems, and improper watering.
- Inspect systems and identify opportunities to improve coverage, reliability, efficiency, and water conservation.
- Install and repair irrigation lines, valves, sprinkler heads, controllers, drip systems, and related components.
- Use hand tools, power tools, and irrigation equipment safely and effectively.
- Perform trenching and other physical installation work when required.
- Adjust irrigation schedules and system operation based on weather, landscape conditions, plant needs, and seasonal requirements.
- Work closely with landscape maintenance crews to ensure irrigation supports the health and appearance of landscaped areas.
- Keep accurate records of installations, repairs, system issues, and work completed.
- Communicate clearly with supervisors and team members regarding system conditions, repairs, and recommended improvements.
- Work independently in the field while maintaining high standards for quality, safety, and professionalism.
What We're Looking For
Required
- Previous hands-on experience working with landscape irrigation systems.
- Strong mechanical and troubleshooting skills.
- Working knowledge of sprinkler, drip, underground, valve, and irrigation-control systems.
- Ability to diagnose problems and determine appropriate repairs rather than simply replacing components.
- Experience safely using hand tools and power tools.
- Ability to perform physical field work, including digging and trenching.
- Ability to work independently and manage tasks efficiently in the field.
- Valid driver's license and ability to travel to job sites throughout Oʻahu.
Preferred
- Experience with irrigation controllers, timers, valves, pumps, or electrical troubleshooting.
- Experience reading irrigation plans or system layouts.
- Experience with commercial or high-end residential landscape irrigation.
- Knowledge of water conservation practices and efficient irrigation design.
- Irrigation, landscape, horticulture, or related certifications.
What We Offer
- $25–$35 per hour, based on experience and technical ability
- Full-time, approximately 40 hours per week
- Health insurance
- Dental insurance
- Vision insurance
- 401(k)
Who Will Succeed in This Role
The strongest candidate will be someone who can arrive at a job site, assess an irrigation problem, figure out what is actually causing it, and get the system working correctly.
We value people who take pride in their work, solve problems rather than work around them, communicate well with the rest of the team, and care about doing the job correctly the first time.
