What are the responsibilities and job description for the Crane Operator - Tree Division position at Hansen's Tree Service and Environmental Resources?
Hansen’s Tree, Lawn & Landscaping Services is looking for an experienced, safety-focused Crane Operator to join our Tree Division.
This is not a typical construction crane position. You will work directly with climbers, arborists, grapple saw operators, and ground crews during large and technical tree removals. Lifts may involve irregular loads, changing centers of gravity, limited setup areas, nearby structures, utilities, landscaping, and other obstacles.
We need an operator who can safely evaluate each pick, communicate clearly with the crew, understand the limits of the equipment, and adjust the plan as conditions change. The right person will be safety-minded, production-minded, mechanically capable, and comfortable making sound decisions in a fast-changing work environment.
What You’ll Do
- Operate knuckle-boom, grapple, and swing-cab cranes during tree removal operations
- Read and apply load charts based on boom length, radius, configuration, and setup
- Evaluate ground conditions, crane placement, outrigger setup, lift paths, and surrounding hazards
- Coordinate lifts with climbers, Crew Leaders, signal persons, and ground crews
- Inspect, transport, set up, and care for assigned equipment
- Stop or modify operations when conditions cannot be maintained safely
- Assist with other tree-service work as business needs require, including groundwork, rigging support, aerial lift work, trimming, pruning, storm response, and jobsite cleanup
Minimum Qualifications
- Valid Class A CDL
- Current DOT Medical Certificate
- Current NCCCO, NCCR, or equivalent recognized crane certification
- Qualification or certification for articulating/knuckle-boom cranes
- Qualification or certification for swing-cab/mobile cranes
- Strong knowledge of load charts, crane capacity, rigging, signaling, ground conditions, and safe setup
- Ability to safely operate and transport assigned equipment
- Acceptable driving record
Tree-care or arboricultural crane experience is strongly preferred. We will also consider a highly experienced crane operator from another industry who has the required certifications, strong mechanical ability, sound judgment, and a genuine willingness to learn tree-specific crane operations.
