Controls Development Engineer – HVAC & Thermal Management

Hanon Systems, a global supplier of innovative automotive thermal and energy management solutions, is seeking a Controls Development Engineer to join our team in our Americas Innovation Center in Novi, MI. A well-qualified candidate will have strong knowledge in the areas of Controls Systems, Thermal Systems, and refrigerant systems.

 

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Utilize Matlab/Simulink and dSpace software and hardware to develop control algorithms for electric vehicle automotive thermal systems including HVAC and powertrain applications
  • Work directly with customers and internal engineering teams to implement desired functionality and achieve performance targets
  • Develop test plans and validate algorithms in simulation and on physical test benches processing data and resolving issues
  • Develop test automation features to increase progress efficiency
  • Setup dSpace hardware and software to interface with automotive thermal system components including actuators, pumps, sensors, valves, blowers, fans, compressors, and heaters
  • Configure LIN (.ldf) and CAN (.dbc) bus files for instrumentation and control applications
  • Provide documentation of control model and support the customer through early-stage vehicle development process
  • Execute code generation processes resolving errors

Experience & Education:

  • Preferred candidate to have a minimum of 1-2 years of applicable experience with a BS degree, or 0-1 years of experience with a MS degree or a PhD
  • Experience is not a hard requirement provided schooling is related to Controls Systems, Thermal Systems, and refrigerant systems

 

Required Competencies, Experience, & Qualifications:

  • Experience with control model development in Matlab/Simulink required
  • Experience with simulation, data analysis, and data visualization practices in Matlab/Simulink, dSpace, and Excel required
  • Experience with setting up dSpace or similar control hardware required
  • A team player with a high attention to detail required
  • Experience with electric vehicle automotive thermal systems including HVAC and powertrain (air, coolant, and refrigerant) applications is desirable
  • Experience with lab testing of physical systems, instrumentation (e.g. thermocouples, thermistors, pressure transducers), and data acquisition is desirable
  • Experience with automotive wire harnesses, connectors, basic electronics, and associated fabrication and troubleshooting (e.g. soldering, connector assembly, multimeter use) is desirable
  • Experience developing validation test plans with and without standards to guide the process is desirable
  • Experience with CAN and LIN applications including modification of .dbc and .ldf files and interacting with dSpace RTI blocksets is desirable
  • Experience with dSpace ControlDesk, TargetLink, MIL/SIL simulation, and the MicroAutoBox platform or similar is desirable
  • Experience with automatic code generation is desirable
  • Knowledge of thermodynamics pertaining to air, refrigerant, and coolant applications is a plus
  • Knowledge of non-traditional thermal system designs including inside condenser and heat pump architectures is a plus
  • Experience with m file scripting and VBA is a plus
  • Experience working with standards and writing technical manuals is a plus
  • Knowledge of Engineering Equation Solver, REFPROP, GT-Suite and 3D solid modeling packages (CATIA or similar) is a plus
  • Experience interacting with customers and giving PowerPoint presentations in a leading role is a plus
