Position Overview
Hanger Law is seeking a full-time Associate Attorney to join our Newport News office. This is an outstanding entry-level opportunity for a new, recently licensed, or returning to the field attorney who wants to develop a well-rounded legal foundation in both litigation and transactional practice.
This position offers meaningful courtroom experience throughout Hampton Roads, as well as direct client interaction and exposure to real estate, business, and estate planning matters. The associate will report directly to the Managing Partner of the Newport News office and will work closely with a supportive team of attorneys, paralegals, and staff.
Practice Areas
The Associate Attorney will be engaged in a diverse mix of legal work, including:
- Civil litigation in the areas of landlord-tenant, contracts, business, and real estate-related disputes
- Real estate settlements and title-related matters
- Business law, including entity formation and contract drafting
- Estate planning (wills, trusts, and related documents)
- Small business support and general counsel services
- Other related tasks related to Virginia civil and transactional law
- Other areas of law may be considered if the candidate has experience in them such as traffic, misdemeanors, or domestic law.
Key Responsibilities
- Appear in court for motions, hearings, and trials throughout Hampton Roads.
- Conduct legal research, analysis, and drafting of pleadings, memoranda, and contracts.
- Conduct client consultations and assess the viability of new matters.
- Handle real estate settlements and transactional closings.
- Collaborate with partners and team members to provide exceptional client service.
- Manage case files and maintain clear, organized documentation in accordance with firm standards.
Qualifications
Required:
- Active Virginia Bar License or pending bar results (with third-year practice certificate).
- Strong legal research, writing, and communication skills.
- Professional, motivated, and client-focused demeanor.
- Ability to manage multiple matters efficiently and meet deadlines.
Preferred:
- Experience or internship background in real estate law, civil litigation, or small business representation.
- Comfort with courtroom appearances and client-facing work.
