Hanger Hall School seeks a compassionate, collaborative, and experienced Part-Time School Counselor to support the social-emotional well-being of our middle school students (grades 6–8). This individual will play a vital role in fostering a safe, inclusive, and supportive school environment where all students can thrive. The counselor will lead the school counseling program, develop activities and resources to implement and evaluate the program, facilitate weekly SEL classes with each cohort, and involve faculty in decisions about student support.
Role OverviewThe School Counselor develops the living and learning skills necessary for students to navigate school and life. They serve as a partner to students, families, and faculty, supporting academic, social, and emotional development while promoting a healthy, respectful, and inclusive school community.
Key Responsibilities- Design, implement, and evaluate a comprehensive school counseling program
- Develop and teach social-emotional learning (SEL) classes for students
- Create and manage advisee groups and schedules
- Partner with teachers to develop themes and activities for advisee and small group settings
- Facilitate and coordinate parent education programs
- Facilitate and coordinate faculty professional development related to well-being
- Provide group counseling and limited individual counseling services focused on developmental and preventive needs
- Provide crisis intervention and conflict resolution support as needed
- Collaborate with external education and social service professionals to support students and families
- Serve as a liaison for referrals to outside counseling and social service providers
- Work individually with students on an as-needed or ongoing basis when recommended
- Maintain detailed and confidential records of student meetings, parent communications, follow-ups, and support plans
- Share timely updates with faculty on student progress, concerns, or needs as they arise
- Use data from surveys, assessments, and observations to evaluate the effectiveness of the counseling program and guide improvements
- Participate in school climate and DEI initiatives to promote a safe and inclusive environment
- Master’s degree in School Counseling, Social Work, Psychology, or a related field
- Relevant licensure or certification preferred
- Experience working with middle school-aged students strongly preferred
- Strong interpersonal, communication, and collaboration skills
- Commitment to equity, inclusion, and confidentiality standards, and legal mandates
- Engagement in ongoing professional development and best practices in school counseling
This is a part-time (.5) position. The schedule is flexible and will be determined in collaboration with the Assistant Head of School and Head of School.
