Job Responsibilities/Duties

Hanford Tank Waste Operations to Closure (H2C) seeks a Fire Protection Engineer (FPE). The FPE advises on compliance with fire related Department of Energy (DOE) requirements, National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) codes and standards, and other applicable requirements. The FPE oversees and provides feedback to the service provider, interacts with all levels of employees and management including the Hanford Fire Marshal and the DOE Fire Protection AHJ, prepares and comments on assessments, reports, design, and procedures.


The Specific duties and responsibilities of the Fire Protection Engineer include but are not limited to the following activities:

* Participate in the design, design approvals, and development of fire protection systems and equipment.

* Create, review, and approve Fire Hazards Analysis and fire protection assessments.

* Analyze life safety requirements for buildings, including building code compliance, occupancy determination, occupant load calculations and egress analysis.

* Perform on-site fire protection system evaluations.

* Perform oversight of the service provider and craft performing work on H2C fire protection systems.

* Provide oversight to various projects and be the interpretive authority for H2C

* Review drawings to ensure proper system configuration for both active and passive fire systems.

* Interface with the Hanford Fire Marshal and, if qualified as a Deputy Fire Marshal (DFM), function on the behalf of the HFM in performing DFM responsibilities as authorized.

* Work closely with nuclear safety staff to maintain the fire hazards analysis for the projects and to support maintenance of the documented safety analysis.

* Maintain current knowledge of the codes, principles, practices, and techniques in the field of fire protection engineering to ensure compliance.

* Implement programs and procedures to ensure work and facility safety is in accordance with all applicable requirements.


Required Qualifications

Grade 18:

Bachelor of Science (BS) in Fire Protection Engineering, Fire Science or related technical field and six (6) years of related experience.


Grade 19:

Bachelor of Science (BS) in Fire Protection Engineering, Fire Science or related technical field and eight (8) years of related experience.


Note the essential duties for this grade level are like that of the previous grade level, however the scope of responsibility is larger, and the expected level of performance is increased.


Grade 20:

Bachelor of Science (BS) in Fire Protection Engineering, Fire Science or related technical field and ten (10) years of related experience.

Note the essential duties for this grade level are like that of the previous grade level, however the scope of responsibility is significantly larger, and the expected level of performance is greatly increased.


Desired Qualifications

* Professional Engineering License in Fire Protection

* Experience at DOE/DOD site

* Level III Certification by the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies in alarms or suppression.


Compensation & Benefits

In accordance with the company's philosophy on compensation for exempt and salaried non-exempt employees, H2C takes into consideration a variety of factors when determining initial grade and salary to include assigned job scope and responsibility, a candidate's qualifications as compared to internal comparators performing in a similar role, and the external labor market. A salary offer will be made at the appropriate grade level and within the targeted hiring range posted according to these factors. Note a candidate's prior salary history will not be taken into consideration.


Hiring Range Minimum: $109,013

Hiring Range Maximum: $166,263
