Job Summary:

As the Medical Assistant (MA) this role is responsible for providing first aid care to UC, scheduling appointments with specialists, coordinating vision and hearing screenings for each UC, and transporting UC to and from these appointments. MA will ensure all UC referred by other program departments, are provided with follow-up appointments with the licensed medical provider. MA will communicate with the Medical Service Coordinator the medical needs and progress of UC, and secure medical care for UC in emergency cases. He/She is also responsible for maintaining compliance with established licensing regulatory agencies, and federal standards requirements.

Essential Functions:

  • Responsible for interviewing UC and documenting medical/personal information in UC medical charts.
  • Provide administration of medication for each UC.
  • Work closely with the LVN to ensure all medications are administered in accordance with the prescribing physician’s instructions.
  • Maintain current on all medication training, to include dispensing medication, monitoring UC for medication side effects, etc.
  • Monitor UC during dispensing of medication to ensure medication is applied/taken in accordance with prescription instructions.
  • Immediately notify the LVN of any concerns regarding UC or the administered medication.
  • Ensure all dispensed medications are properly logged, and maintain ongoing pill counts to ensure medication administration records are accurate.
  • Coordinate, maintain, and update the medication management system to allow for the administration of medication to UC in accordance with DFPS, ORR, and DHHS requirements.
  • Communicate all UC and staff concerns regarding medication side effects to the LVN, who will communicate with the primary physician to obtain further guidance.
  • Maintain all medication records, and update refill requests for all medications.
  • Maintain their certification in CPR. The MA will report potential health and safety hazards to the LVN.
  • Participate in scheduled meetings, team decisions and operations.
  • Adhere to scheduled hours pertaining to position, remain available for on-call scheduling, and work evenings, weekends and holidays as needed, requested, or deemed appropriate.
  • Know, understand, and apply positive behavior management techniques including verbal redirection, de-escalation, and containment.
  • Know and recognize the signs of abuse, neglect, and exploitation and sexually provocative behavior and implement professional response, reporting and documenting procedures.
  • Work collaboratively with other staff members, service providers, professionals, and children.
  • Communicate effectively in writing and verbally.
  • Maintain computer literacy required to meet the responsibilities of the position.
  • Able to react professionally to change and handle essential tasks as assigned.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment while maintaining control and professional composure at all times and making decisions based on the needs of the program and service population.
  • Exhibit the ability to maintain professional people skills, oral, written, listening, and non-verbal communication skills.

Qualifications:

  • Must be at least 21 years of age at the time of hire and bilingual (English/Spanish).
  • At least two years of relevant work experience in the medical field preferred
  • Registered Medical Assistant Certification (RMA/CMA) preferred.
  • Must be current on medical practices, issues, trends, and be able to coordinate problem-solving strategies in order to meet the medical needs of children in care.
  • Must possess a valid state driver’s license and be eligible to drive to facilitate program services as required by contractual agreement.
  • Cleared Tuberculosis test results.
  • Cleared background check from appropriate entity and subjected to random drug test.
  • Must be flexible as it pertains to schedule and be willing to work irregular and long hours including evenings and weekends.

Physical Demands:

Must be able to obtain and perform Emergency Behavior Intervention Training (EBI)/Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) certification and First Aid Certification (CPR). Must be able to supervise clients indoors and outdoors as necessary. Bending, stooping and lifting up to 15lbs required to complete daily tasks. Most activities include repetitive motions and can include overhead reaching.

Work Environment:

Work is at a youth care facility at which minors receive multiple services. Work shifts are subject to change. Noise levels vary from mild to moderate. Predominantly indoors, occasional outdoor monitoring or activities.
