Hampton University Proton Cancer Institute (Hampton Proton) is seeking an onsite part-time or full-time Medical Transcriptionist (with 2 years of experience) who interprets and transcribes dictation by physicians and other healthcare professionals regarding patient assessment, workup, therapeutic procedures, clinical course, diagnosis, prognosis, etc., in order to document patient care and facilitate delivery of healthcare services. This role is a specialist in medical language and ensures that all medical documentation is precise, timely, and compliant with regulatory standards.

Hampton Proton is the nation’s 8th proton therapy facility and one of the largest free-standing proton clinics in the world. The state-of-the-art treatment and research center has four gantry rooms and one fixed beam room. Hampton Proton has been treating a variety of cancers since August 2010.

Hampton University Proton Cancer Institute (Hampton Proton) began with a vision. After the instillation of the first proton cancer treatment institute in 1990, rumblings of the therapy’s success reached Hampton University president, Dr. William R. Harvey. Upon learning more about the treatment from a Hampton University alumnus, he assembled a team to assess the feasibility of what would become the largest free-standing proton therapy facility in the world.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Listen to and transcribe audio recordings from healthcare professionals into accurate written documents.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of the medicolegal implications and responsibilities related to the transcription of patient records to protect the patient and the business/institution. Meets standards of professional and ethical conduct and confidentiality. Adheres to HIPAA regulations.
  • Return dictated reports in printed or electronic form for physicians' review, signature, and corrections, and for inclusion in patients' medical records.
  • Recognizes, interprets, and evaluates inconsistencies, discrepancies, and inaccuracies in medical dictation and appropriately edits, revises and clarifies without altering the meaning of the dictation and making sure to check with doctors to obtain the correct information.
  • Transcribe medical dictation to provide a permanent record of patient care. Applies knowledge of medical terminology, abbreviations, procedures, anatomy, and physiology to the transcription and proofreading of medical dictation from originators.
  • Reviews and edits transcribed reports for spelling, grammar, clarity, consistency, and proper medical terminology. Communicate with physicians or healthcare staff to clarify dictations when necessary.
  • Format reports according to established guidelines and organizational standards. Adding and updating external physician directory.
  • Operates designated word processing, dictation, and transcription equipment as directed to complete assignment using designated equipment effectively, skillfully, and efficiently. Maintains equipment and work area as directed. Assesses condition of equipment and furnishings, and reports need for replacement or repair.
  • Distinguishes between homonyms and recognize inconsistencies and mistakes in medical terms, referring to dictionaries, drug references, and other sources on anatomy, physiology, and medicine if directed by physicians and other healthcare practitioners.
  • Answer inquiries concerning the progress of medical cases, within the limits of confidentiality laws.
  • Stay updated on medical terminology, procedures, and compliance requirements.
  • Uses interpersonal skills effectively to build and maintain cooperative working relationships with physicians, management and supervisory staff, medical staff and coworkers.
  • Assure the efficient operation of workflow within the department by performing other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent; additional certification in medical transcription preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, and healthcare documentation standards.
  • Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills
  • Excellent listening and typing skills with high attention to detail.
  • Time management skills to prioritize and meet deadlines.
  • You are highly organized with outstanding attention to detail.
  • Flexibility to work in a changing environment.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and adhere to HIPAA regulations.
  • Proficiency in transcription software, electronic health record (EHR) systems, and Microsoft Office Suite.

Work Environment:

  • Work environment is in onsite.
  • Extended periods of time in a sitting/stationary position and typing.
  • Constantly operates office technology, such as computers and printers.
  • Be able to reach, push, pull, hold, and lift up to 25 lbs., as needed.
  • Frequently communicate through listening and speaking to exchange accurate information.
