What are the responsibilities and job description for the Plant Financial Analyst position at Hampton Farms?
This position is based at our Hampton Farms location in Springfield, MA.
Position Summary
Hampton Farms is seeking a Plant Financial Analyst to own the financial reporting, analysis, and close activities for our Springfield operation. The Springfield facility focuses on tree nut, dried fruit, and candy packing—a multi-category, high-SKU environment that demands strong cost accounting instincts and attention to detail. This is not a support role—this is an ownership role. You will be the single point of accountability for plant-level financial performance, working directly with the Controller and plant operations leadership to drive decisions with data.
We are a fast-growing, vertically integrated peanut company with multiple subsidiaries and production facilities. Our finance team operates in a lean, high-autonomy environment where analysts are expected to identify problems, investigate root causes, and recommend solutions without waiting for direction. If you need step-by-step instructions for routine tasks, this is not the right fit. If you thrive when given clear objectives and the freedom to figure out how to get there, keep reading.
We’re not hiring a report-puller. Hampton Farms is actively modernizing its finance function through automation, system integration, and process redesign. The tedious, repetitive work that makes talented people leave is being systematically eliminated. What remains—and what you’ll spend your time on—is the analytical, judgment-driven work that actually matters: understanding cost behavior, advising operations on financial impact, and contributing to strategic decisions.
You’ll work directly with the Controller, plant leadership, and corporate finance in a flat structure where your analysis directly influences outcomes. Springfield’s multi-category packing operation—tree nuts, dried fruit, and candy—means variety in the work and exposure to diverse cost structures within one of the largest nut companies in the United States. If you want to grow your career in manufacturing finance, this is the environment to do it.
Responsibilities
- Full ownership of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close activities for the Springfield plant, including journal entries, account reconciliations, and variance analysis.
- Plant-level P&L analysis across tree nut, dried fruit, and candy product lines, with a focus on cost of goods sold, material costs, labor variances, overhead absorption, and margin performance by category.
- Sales reconciliation between ERP data and operational records—identifying discrepancies and resolving them independently.
- Standard cost maintenance, bill of materials validation, and cost variance investigation in partnership with plant operations.
- Monthly financial reporting packages for plant and corporate leadership, including narrative analysis that explains the “why” behind the numbers.
- Capital expenditure tracking, ROI modeling, and post-investment performance analysis.
- Budgeting and forecasting support, building bottoms-up models grounded in operational reality rather than spreadsheet extrapolation.
- Inventory accounting oversight including cycle count reconciliation, excess and obsolete analysis, and shrinkage investigation.
- Ad hoc financial analysis to support operational decisions—pricing, capacity, make-vs-buy, customer profitability, and similar requests from leadership.
- Audit support for both internal and external engagements, maintaining clean workpapers and documentation that stand on their own.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
- 3–5 years of experience in financial analysis or plant/cost accounting in a manufacturing or packing environment. Food manufacturing, CPG, or multi-SKU packing experience is a strong plus.
- Solid understanding of cost accounting principles: standard costing, variance analysis, overhead allocation, and inventory valuation.
- Proficiency in ERP systems—NetSuite experience is strongly preferred.
- Advanced Excel skills: pivot tables, INDEX/MATCH, data modeling, scenario analysis. You use Excel as a tool, not a crutch.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently, manage competing priorities, and meet deadlines with minimal supervision.
- Clear, direct communication skills. You can present findings to plant managers and corporate leadership without needing a translator.
- Independence. You will receive clear objectives and context, not scripts. We expect you to manage your own workload, ask smart questions early, and deliver on time without being chased.
- Business acumen. You understand that financial analysis exists to inform decisions, not just produce reports. You can explain what a variance means for the business in plain language.
- Ownership of accuracy. When something doesn’t tie, you investigate. You do not pass along numbers you haven’t validated or ask someone else to check your work as a default.
- Engagement. You attend meetings prepared, contribute to discussions, and proactively flag issues. You are a visible, communicative member of the finance and operations team.
- Adaptability. Our finance function is evolving rapidly. Several close processes have been automated and more are in development. You should be comfortable working alongside automated workflows and contributing to continuous improvement.
Preferred Qualifications
- Direct NetSuite experience, including saved searches, reporting, and basic system navigation.
- Experience with month-end close in a multi-entity or multi-subsidiary environment.
- Exposure to inventory accounting, product costing, or supply chain finance.
- Familiarity with business intelligence tools or willingness to learn (e.g., NSAW, Power BI).
- Experience in Lean Manufacturing, continuous improvement, or Six Sigma environments.
