Job Summary
Under general supervision is responsible for assisting students in learning reading skills that will contribute to their development in being proficient in the areas of reading comprehension.  Reports to the principal.
 
Essential Job Functions
  1. Meets and instructs assigned classes in the location and at the times designated.
  2. Plans a program of study that, as much as possible, meets the individual needs interests, and abilities of the students.
  3. Creates a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of the students.
  4. Prepares for classes assigned, and show written evidence of preparation upon requests of immediate superior.
  5. Encourages students to set and maintain standards of classroom behavior.
  6. Guides the learning process toward achievement of curriculum goals and in harmony with the goals establishes clear objectives for all lessons, units, projects and the like to communicate these objectives to students.
  7. Employs a variety of instructional techniques and instructional media, consistent with the physical limitations of the location provided and the needs and capabilities of the individuals or student groups involved.
  8. Strives to implement by instruction and action the district's philosophy of educational and instructional goals and objectives.
  9. Assesses the accomplishments of students on a regular basis and provides progress reports as required.
  10. Diagnoses the learning disabilities of students on a regular basis, seeking the assistance of district specialists as required.
  11. Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities.
  12. Maintains accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, district policies and rules governing student life and conduct, and for the classroom, develops reasonable rules of classroom behavior and procedure, and maintains order in the classroom in a fair and just manner.
  13. Makes provision for being available to students and parents for education-related purposes outside the instructional day when required or requested to do so under reasonable terms.
  14. Plans and supervises purposeful assignments for teacher assistants and volunteers.
  15. Strives to maintain and improve professional competence.
  16. Attends staff meetings and in-service activities as directed.
  17. Serves on staff committees as required.
  18. Maintains professional relationships with students and faculty; follow ethics of the teaching profession; and promotes the welfare of students at all times.
  19. Demonstrates regular and prompt attendance.
  20. Maintain confidentiality in the conduct of district business, act ethically, set priorities, and work well under pressure with attention to detail.
  21. Performs other related duties as assigned or requested by the Principal or Superintendent of Schools.
Education and Experience:
  1. Education and experience as required by state certification authorities in the area of reading/language arts.
  2. Proficient in computers and word processing software; or any equivalent combination of training software and experience that provide required knowledge.
  3. Supports the vision, mission and beliefs of Hampton County School District.
Knowledge:
  1. Knowledge of the policies, procedures and activities of the school District which pertains to the specific duties and responsibilities of the position.
  2. Knowledge in the methods for developing lesson plans and materials, and classroom activities which stimulate learning.
  3. Knowledge of the records, forms and reports which must be prepared and maintained.
  4. Knowledge of proper maintenance of equipment, materials and supplies used in daily activities.
  5. Knowledge of counseling methods necessary for handling student academic and adjustment problems.
  6. Knowledge of the materials and information which must be prepared for classroom instructional activities.
  7. Knowledge of general computer applications and their utilization as related to specific tasks and responsibilities.
  8. Knows how to keep abreast of changes in policy, standards, procedures, and regulations pertinent to personnel and community related functions.
  9. Thorough knowledge of Business English, spelling, grammar, punctuation, possession of an excellent vocabulary and mathematical computation. 
Skills/Effort:
  1. Ability to provide instruction to students through explanation, demonstration and/or supervised practice.
  2. Ability to supervise students and maintain order in various classroom and instructional activities and situations.
  3. Ability to operate general office equipment in the performance of daily activities.
  4. Ability to prepare lesson plans, tests, and instructional materials for classroom activities.
  5. Ability to identify student adjustment and/or academic problems, provide counseling and/or recommend appropriate remedial action to parents.
  6. Ability to communicate effectively with students and their parents, District staff, and all other groups involved in the activities of the job.
  7. Strong organizational skills.
  8. Ability to plan, organize and prioritize daily activities.
  9. Ability to operate general office equipment in the performance of daily activities.

Working Conditions:
  1. Conducts duties in a classroom environment with some exposure to environmental conditions.
  2. Requires ability to work under a degree of stress related duties that require constant attention and working with students.
  3. Occasional local travel is required; no overnight travel is required.
  4. Job requires the operation of standard office equipment.
  5. Physical demands are restricted to general office activities requiring movement/lifting items weighing up to 50 pounds.
  6. Requires ability to work under a degree of stress related to duties that require meeting tight deadlines, considerable attention and working with both adults and students.
