Job Summary
Under limited supervision, responsible for providing safe transportation of students to and from school and back to their homes. 
Essential Job Functions
  1. Operates a bus over a route which has been designated and approved by the Coordinator/Supervisor of Transportation and the State Department of Education. Follow assigned routes and adhere to set schedule.
  2. Observes all traffic laws and safety regulations.
  3. Maintains safety precautions when students are boarding and departing the bus.
  4. Operates equipment in accordance with all state laws and regulations.
  5. Report all accidents, vehicle damage and student injuries as they occur.
  6. Discuss and conduct bus emergency evacuation drills and other safety procedures.
  7. Operate wheelchair lift when transporting special needs students.
  8. Maintain the confidentiality of sensitive information seen or hear.
  9. Maintains discipline of students being transported, and reports misconduct to the school administrators for appropriate disciplinary action using incident report provided.
  10. Maintains a clean appearance of equipment, and reports any vandalism or equipment failures to immediate supervisor.
  11. Complete pre-trip and post-trip inspections and submit work orders as necessary.
  12. Provides written reports of road hazards on assigned routes.
  13. Coordinates route changes with administrators and immediate supervisor.
  14. Maintains an up-to-date status of students to transportation office.
  15. Attends safety meetings.
  16. Participates in Special Needs Road.
  17. Participates in State Road.
  18. Drives activity trips as needed if available.
  19. Attend and participate in transportation safety and in-service training workshops and meeting.
  20. Maintains accurate and up-to-date daily records on mileage and time sheets.
  21. Exhibits acceptable conduct as an employee in keeping with School Board policies.
  22. Maintains current required driver’s license and other operator’s certification.
  23. Administers general first aid when needed.
  24. Performs other related duties as assigned or requested by the Transportation Coordinator/Supervisor.
 
 
Education and Experience:
  1. Must have or be eligible for a valid South Carolina Commercial Driver’s License (Class B with P&S endorsement).
  2. Must be able to pass South Carolina Department of Transportation mandated physical exam every two years.
  3. Acceptable driving records.
  4. Must be at least 18 years old with no more than 4 points against driver’s license. 
  5. Must have 10 hours of driving experience under supervision of an experienced driver.
Knowledge:
  1. Thorough knowledge of school District policies and procedures pertinent to the duties of the job. 
  2. Thorough knowledge of handling discipline and working with students. 
  3. Knowledge of basic clerical functions and modern office procedures and equipment.
  4. Knows how to react calmly and quickly in emergency situations.
Skills/Effort:
  1. Written and verbal communication skills necessary to handle difficult and emotional situations. 
  2. Skills in organization and maintenance of records and files. 
  3. Ability to make decisions in non-routine situations requiring good judgment. 
  4. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, teachers, parents and other individuals/groups with interest in the District. 
  5. Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
  6. Ability to handle disciplinary actions and disruptions.
Working Conditions:
Generally, conducts duties in a vehicle with some exposure to environmental conditions.  Physical demands requiring the lifting/moving of items weighing up to 100 pounds.
