Hammond Lower School seeks dynamic, trustworthy, and reliable individuals committed to maintaining productive and positive classroom learning during times when regular classroom teachers are unable to report to work. We welcome candidates who are interested in gaining hands-on experience in elementary education, working directly with young children, or exploring a pathway into teaching. Ideally, candidates will have knowledge of effective teaching practices that ensure learning is a comfortable and meaningful experience. Our ideal candidates have excellent interpersonal and organizational skills and experience working with children ages 4–10.
This position is on an as-needed basis. The full duty day is 7:45 a.m.–3:15 p.m., and substitutes are often requested to work partial or half days, as well as up to several full days at a time. While advance notice is often given, substitutes may be contacted the evening prior or early the morning of the day needed due to teacher illness or family emergency, so flexibility, responsiveness, and a willingness to support the needs of the school community are desirable though not required.

Lower School Substitute Teacher responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Adhering to the curriculum and lesson plans provided by the regular teacher.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Following established school and classroom procedures and achieving lesson goals.
- Complying with the duty schedule of the teacher being covered for the day, including recess supervision, hallway transitions, lunch duty, and carpool procedures.
- Complying with all school employee regulations and policies at all times.
- Taking attendance.
- Ensuring the classroom and workstations are kept clean and orderly.
- Overseeing normal classroom rhythms and activities, including student engagement, behavior support, and positive classroom management.
- Compiling a report for the teacher to review upon their return.
- Following school safety plans and procedures.
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Experience supervising children
- Professional reference able to verify experience supervising children
