Band Teacher Job Description
Reports To: School Principal
Term of Employment: 10 Months
Position Overview
The Band Teacher is responsible for developing and delivering high-quality, standards-based music instruction to students in Richmond County Schools. This role includes preparing students for performances such as concerts, pep band events, assemblies, and school programs, while teaching instrumental skills, musical literacy, and music theory. The teacher is expected to create an engaging, positive, and supportive learning environment that aligns with the mission and goals of Richmond County Schools.
Core Responsibilities
Instructional Duties

Deliver instruction in instrumental performance, music reading, ensemble skills, and music theory.

Prepare students for school and community performances, including concerts, pep bands, plays, and special programs.

Manage rehearsals effectively to ensure musical growth and ensemble success.
Lesson & Curriculum Planning

Develop and implement daily lesson plans that support district standards and educational goals.

Align instruction with Richmond County Schools’ curriculum, policies, and best practices.
Student Assessment & Progress Monitoring

Assess student progress as individual musicians and ensemble members.

Document growth, celebrate achievements, and provide constructive feedback to support continuous improvement.
Administrative & Professional Duties

Participate in required staff meetings, professional development, and student support meetings (including IEP/504 meetings when applicable).

Complete and submit reports, grades, and documentation in a timely manner.

Uphold all Richmond County Schools Board policies, professional ethics, and state licensing standards.
Other Duties
Extracurricular Responsibilities

Supervise or assist with extracurricular activities such as band clubs, after-school rehearsals, travel events, and performances.

Support non-instructional duties such as bus duty, cafeteria supervision, hallway monitoring, or committee service as assigned.
Coordination & Supervision
-
Supervise and coordinate the work of any assigned teacher assistants or volunteers supporting the music program.
General Requirements
Certifications & Credentials
-
Bachelor’s degree in Music or Music Education (Master’s degree preferred but not required).

Hold or be eligible for a North Carolina teaching license in Music Education (K-12).
Professional Skills
-
Strong musical expertise and proficiency in a variety of instruments.

Effective classroom management and communication skills.

Ability to collaborate with colleagues, administrators, arts programs, and feeder schools to promote and strengthen the music program.
Physical Requirements
-
The position may require standing, walking, bending, and moving equipment.

Lifting up to 20 pounds may be required, such as moving instruments, music stands, chairs, and classroom materials.
