Our programs specialize in preventing family homelessness when possible, providing shelter and transitional housing to families in times of need, supporting the wellbeing and academic achievement of children who experience homelessness, and quickly returning families to safe and stable housing throughout the Greater Bay Area. What You’ll Do

The Chief Operating Officer (COO), reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, leads Hamilton Families’ operations across administration, facilities, and technology to ensure a safe, efficient, and well-supported environment for staff and program participants. The COO is responsible for optimizing organizational processes and infrastructure to deliver high-quality services while mitigating operational risk.

This role oversees all operational functions, including administrative services, facilities management, and technology systems. The COO partners closely with the executive team and program leadership to assess organizational needs, plan capital improvements, and manage major repairs and projects, including vendor and contractor oversight.

The COO develops and executes operational strategies and objectives related to capital projects, compliance, and regulatory requirements, while establishing and managing budgets, policies, and procedures that strengthen organizational effectiveness.

As a key member of the leadership team, the COO provides strategic direction and hands-on support to operations, administration, and the Managed Service Provider, fostering a collaborative, solutions-oriented approach across the organization.


What Your Day Looks Like

Administration

  • Ensure effective, compliant, and risk-aware administrative and operational practices across the organization 
  • Lead safety and emergency preparedness efforts, maintaining compliance with ADA, OSHA, and contractual requirements 
  • Chair the Safety Committee and foster a culture of safety and accountability 
  • Build strong partnerships with internal teams, community stakeholders, and vendors 
  • Lead, coach, and develop operations and administrative staff 

Facilities

  • Oversee the maintenance, safety, and long-term planning of all facilities and grounds 
  • Manage vendor and contractor relationships to ensure high-quality, cost-effective services 
  • Develop and oversee facilities budgets, including capital planning and major projects 
  • Lead capital improvements and site projects from planning through execution 

Technology

  • Oversee organizational technology systems to ensure they effectively support staff and program delivery 
  • Partner with program leadership to implement and optimize systems and tools 
  • Establish and manage policies for AI and technology use, ensuring responsible and compliant adoption 
  • Provide staff training and guidance on technology, data security, and evolving tools 
  • Identify opportunities to improve systems, workflows, and infrastructure


What You Bring

  • 10–15 years of progressive leadership experience in operations, administration, or a related field, including 7–10 years managing and developing high-performing teams 
  • Demonstrated success designing and implementing operational systems, policies, and infrastructure that support mission-driven service delivery 
  • Experience working in or alongside nonprofit, social services, or housing organizations, with a strong understanding of compliance, funding requirements, and community impact 
  • Strong commitment to equity, inclusion, and trauma-informed practices, with the ability to embed these principles into operations, policies, and workplace culture 
  • Skilled in strategic thinking and decision-making, with the ability to navigate complex, high-pressure situations with sound judgment 
  • Proven ability to manage cross-functional initiatives and competing priorities, with strong project management and execution skills 
  • Effective collaborator and negotiator, able to build trusted relationships with staff, community partners, public agencies, and vendors 
  • Experience overseeing organizational technology and infrastructure, including systems implementation, data management, and security practices 
  • Solid understanding of operational and facilities best practices, including risk management, safety, and regulatory compliance 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to engage diverse audiences and translate complex concepts clearly 
  • Highly organized and self-directed, with strong time management skills and a track record of meeting deadlines and driving results 
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Adobe applications (e.g., Outlook, Word, Excel, Acrobat)
  • Essential functions of the position may require the use of a telephone, working at a standard computer terminal, and the ability to follow reasonable ergonomic recommendations, sit, kneel, stand, drive, or walk for long periods, reach, bend, lift, carry up to 40 pounds, and ability to climb stairs as needed
  • Valid CADL and clean DMV record; able and willing to travel locally as needed
  • Criminal background check, fingerprint imaging, TB (Tuberculosis) clearance, and documentation required post offer

Compensation: $110k-150k annually 

Position Type: Full-time, Exempt 

Work Hours: 32 hours
