THIS POSTING IS FOR TWO (2) VACANCIES.
Under general supervision, operates a variety of heavy vehicles and equipment in support of County work projects and activities in a safe and efficient manner.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following tasks, physical requirements, knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics. This list of tasks is ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY, and is not a comprehensive listing of all functions and tasks performed by incumbents of this class.Operates a variety of heavy vehicles and equipment such as, but not limited to, bulldozers, graders, front-end loaders, single axle trucks, multi-axle trucks, cranes, and rollers in the loading, hauling, and unloading of various equipment, materials, and supplies in a safe and efficient manner; must have knowledge of proper procedures for securing equipment/materials on a truck or trailer and transporting safely; performs vehicle and equipment checks; performs preventive maintenance; may provide assistance in traffic control to insure work zone safety; may transfer equipment to and from work sites; may provide assistance in snow removal and ice control. May be called upon to work during emergency weather conditions during and after normal work hours. Works around all types of moving equipment.
Reviews work orders for assignments; ensures work place safety; maintains documentation of work performed; may have to read/interpret blueprints and work specifications. Works in a lead capacity when supervisor is not onsite to oversee jobsite set up, safety and job completion. Performs other related duties as assigned.Knowledge of operating and service manuals and other documentation for operation and maintenance of vehicles and various equipment.
Knowledge of Hwy. Dept. work order system and Hamilton County policies and procedures.
Knowledge of Federal, State, and County codes and regulations relating to vehicle operation and workplace safety.
Knowledge of County geography, facilities, and work sites.
Skill in working with a variety of vehicles and heavy equipment; service manuals, and project blueprints and specifications.
Skill in reading, interpreting, understanding, and applying applicable Federal and State rules and regulations, Hamilton County Policies and Procedures.
Skill in working with a variety of hand tools and other equipment such as shovels, rakes, pry bars, chains, chain saw, etc.
Skill in establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with the public, department staff, other County departments, service and parts vendors.The equivalent of a high school diploma, plus five (5) years of direct work experience in vehicle, multi-axle trucks, and heavy equipment operation. A valid Class “A” CDL permit is required at the time of hire.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
A valid Class “A” CDL must be obtained within one (1) year of date of hire. Hamilton County will provide training through Chattanooga State to obtain a Class A CDL.
This position is deemed essential/situational during inclement weather situations and must report to or remain at work, even when administrative closings are announced, as determined by the Department Head.
Prior to operating a County-owned vehicle, all employees are required to complete the HC Defensive Driving course and/or or an Emergency Vehicle Operations Course (EVOC) provided at the department level.
SAFETY SENSITIVE:
This position has been identified as “safety sensitive” under the definition of 49 CFR Part 40-Department of Transportation Workplace Drug and Alcohol Policy. This position will be subject to drug and alcohol testing for the following: 1) post offer pre-employment 2) when there is reasonable cause 3) after an on-the-job accident or contributing to an accident 4) on a random basis 5) prior to return to duty after suspension and/or 6) as follow-up. This is additional and also subject to the Rules and Regulations of the Employee Handbook.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Work requires moderate physical effort involving considerable sitting and driving with intermittent walking and standing. The employee is frequently required to stand, talk and hear. The employee is occasionally required to walk, sit, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl. The employee must frequently lift or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust while performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions and is frequently exposed to hot, cold, dry, wet, dusty, muddy, windy, and/or humid conditions. The employee frequently works near moving equipment, mechanical parts, and is frequently exposed to vibrations, jostling, and bouncing. The employee may work in high, precarious places and may be exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
