Overview

The purpose of this classification is to lead efforts to strengthen cultural competency across Hamilton County Schools. Guided by the district’s Educational Equity Plan, this role will support initiatives that foster inclusive practices, promote cross-cultural understanding, and reduce barriers to belonging. The coordinator will play a key role in embedding equity into district-wide practices by centering student and educator voices and advancing a culture of care throughout the school system.


Responsibilities

  • Plan, facilitate, and conduct Culture Walk-Throughs by recruiting and retaining a diverse group of educators to assess the physical environments of schools and conduct student interviews to gauge inclusivity and belonging within the building. Create detailed reports for schools after the Culture Walk-Through by highlighting celebrations, observations, and providing recommendations for emphasizing a culture of care and increasing student belonging.
  • Establish a teacher/educator voice component to Culture Walk-Throughs. Learn more about educator feelings of belonging and blind spots that may persist within the school environment.
  • Expand and formalize professional development for educators who have a desire to participate in Culture Walk-Throughs, build their equity lens, and foster belonging within their schools.
  • Procure funding sources to provide financial support to schools who completed a Culture Walk-Through in order to implement recommendations from the report.
  • Create a Culture of Care Series for increased educator cultural competency. This professional development series aims to help educators understand the background and lived experiences of students who have historically been underserved in educational settings. Collaboration with community experts will be vital to creating a comprehensive and meaningful series.
  • Build capacity for Culture and Climate Committees to be implemented in all schools throughout the district. Create a model for these committees to include purpose, best practices, and available resources. Allocate funding to support stipends of committee members.
  • Develop an application and selection process to provide mini grants to educators who have a desire to make their classroom and/or educational spaces more inclusive and representative. Train mentors to assist educators in enhancing their spaces
  • Creates a customer-focused climate and provides quality services and support to students, families, schools, and other stakeholders.
  • May operate a motor vehicle to conduct various work activities.
  • Attends meetings as needed.
  • Prepares or completes various documents, reports, and correspondence as required.
  • Complies with applicable district, state, and federal codes, laws, rules, regulations, standards, policies and procedures.
  • Adheres to the Teacher Code of Ethics as defined by Tennessee Law and Code of Professional Conduct as defined by Board Policy 5.6011.
  • Acts in a professional, respectful, and welcoming manner at all times.
  • Creates a customer-focused climate and provides quality services and support to schools, community, businesses, Superintendent of Schools, Board of Education, and other stakeholders.
  • Works collaboratively with all stakeholders.
  • Follows established procedures to ensure assigned areas are safe.
  • Maintains confidentiality.
  • Attends work and arrives to work on time.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education, Experience, and Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in School Counseling, Social Work, Human Services, Education, or a related field;
  • Three (3) years of experience in a related field;
  • Or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
  • Must maintain a valid state issued driver’s license.

  • Grant writing or fund procurement experience
  • Ability to work collaboratively with diverse staff, students, families, community partners, and professionals within schools and the district.
  • Demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication, planning, organizational, problem-solving, decision-making, and time management skills

Compensation
Salary is based on a combination of relevant education and experience.
