JOB TITLE: Certified Medical Assistant/Phlebotomist
DEPARTMENT: Hico Clinic
JOB SUMMARY: Under the supervision of the Clinic Manager, obtains patient specimens and conducts medical laboratory operations. Performs and assists with delegated procedures, records data in medical record, and serves as a liaison between patient/family and provider. OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens Class I.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
A. Obtains specimens from patients.
a. Follows requests for specimen testing as prescribed by physicians.
b. Draws and processes specimens in compliance with established procedures.
c. Identifies and labels specimens.
d. Interacts with patients of all ages, including infants, when collecting specimens.
e. Maintains supplies at drawing station
B. Receives lab requests.
a. Receives written or electronic requests from physicians for routine or special laboratory tests and processes them appropriately.
b. Obtains signed physician orders for outpatient specimens.
c. Receives outpatient specimens from outside agencies.
d. Enters requests into the computer.
C. Assists with processing samples.
a. Properly labels samples with MH label
b. Prepares samples for transport to HGH Lab via courier
D. Performs laboratory waived testing.
a. Performs all waived testing
b. Ensures all calibrations and quality control up to date for all kits and instruments used for testing
E. Performs routine daily clerical tasks.
a. Answers the telephone and takes messages appropriately.
b. Ensures all lab results are received by provider and updates send-out log accordingly.
c. Appropriately documents lab reports and documents it accordingly in Electronic Health Record.
d. Conducts all necessary quality assurance
F. Effectively performs and assists with delegated procedures
a. Records observations and evaluations of patient response in medical record.
b. Safely assists patients to and from the waiting room for appointment.
c. Prepares patients for exams and procedures by obtaining blood pressure, weight, height and subjective information related to patient’s health.
d. Assists with surgical procedures performed in the clinic.
e. Administers drugs or medications by protocol, either orally or by injection with provider order. Documents orders in patient medical record.
G. Accepts and documents verbal orders from the provider.
a. Refills prescription requests per physician request.
b. Serves as a liaison between patient/family and provider by collecting data and sharing information in a clear and concise manner.
H. Ensures that inventory for supplies and equipment is appropriate.
a. Exam rooms and lab are stocked and checked for cleanliness.
b. Maintains minimum formulary levels and performs monthly internal inventory.
I. Follows Standard Precautions for Infection Control
OTHER SIGNIFICANT REQUIREMENTS:
A. Maintains confidentiality while working with confidential matters on a daily basis.
B. Provides service direct to patients while maintaining a positive customer relations atmosphere.
C. Follows safety guidelines and policies for the Hamilton Healthcare System.
D. Follows procedures for using precautions when involved in direct patient contact or when handling potentially infectious materials.

Qualifications
JOB QUALIFICATIONS:
A. Education: High school graduate or equivalent.
B. Personal job-related skills: Verbal and written communication skills. Ability to learn technical procedures involved in laboratory testing.
C. Licensure, registry or certification: Medical Assistant Certification and CPR certification.
D. Experience:
1. Prior Work Experience: One-year experience in a medical setting and phlebotomist training preferred.
2. Technical Training: Preferred Medical Assistant Course and or completion of Phlebotomy training course.
E. Physical and Mental Requirements: Duties of the position require moderate periods of sitting and standing, lifting up to 30 pounds. Must be able to hear equipment alarms and have vision to read labeling, instructions and to conduct tests. The ability to comprehend and follow written or verbal instructions.
