Position Overview
The Project Estimator is responsible for preparing accurate and competitive cost estimates for heavy civil construction projects. This role works closely with the estimating team to analyze project documents, develop pricing strategies, and support the successful procurement of work. The ideal candidate brings strong field experience, technical knowledge of construction operations, and the ability to manage multiple deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
Key Responsibilities
Estimating & Cost Analysis
• Develop detailed quantity take-offs from plans and specifications.
• Prepare comprehensive cost estimates using HCSS HeavyBid.
• Analyze drawings, specifications, and other contract documents.
• Research historical cost data, production rates, and market trends.
Bid Coordination
• Solicit, coordinate, and evaluate subcontractor and supplier bid packages.
• Compare bids and identify scope gaps or inconsistencies.
• Participate in pre-bid meetings and site visits as required.
Proposal Development
• Assist in preparing Statements of Qualifications (SOQs) and Requests for Proposals (RFPs).
• Review and contribute to written proposal content.
• Collaborate with internal teams to develop competitive bid strategies.
Team Collaboration
• Work closely with project managers, engineers, and field staff.
• Support the estimating team in securing new projects.
• Communicate effectively regarding priorities, deadlines, and bid results.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in the field as a Project Engineer, Project Superintendent, or Project Manager.
• Strong understanding of heavy civil construction means and methods.
• Ability to interpret construction drawings, specifications, and contract documents.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet strict deadlines.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Proactive, self-driven, and team-oriented work style.
• Ability to access active construction sites in varying weather and terrain conditions.
• Valid driver’s license.
• Ability to obtain and maintain an eRailSafe Card, which includes successfully meeting background screening requirements for safety-sensitive railroad project access, in accordance with applicable federal, state, and local laws.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with HCSS HeavyBid and Primavera P6.
• Experience estimating bridge, structural, or rail-related projects.
• Familiarity with railroad requirements such as eRailSafe and BNSF contractor credentials.
• Previous experience preparing SOQs and RFP responses.
