Description

The EHS Director is responsible for developing, implementing, and administering occupational safety, emergency response, process safety, industrial hygiene, environmental and security management systems, programs, policies, and practices to adhere to Local, State and Federal regulations. This position leads EHS at Halocarbon's manufacturing plant in North Augusta, SC and directly manages the EHS team.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Identify and develop strategic plans/controls to manage health, safety, emergency response, security, and regulatory risks.
  • Monitor new EHS regulations or emerging issues to ensure compliance with all Federal, State and Local laws along with regulatory agency requirements, including: Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Process Safety Management (PSM), Department of Homeland Security (DHS), SCDHEC, Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC)).
  • Guide and assist company management in identifying, addressing, and correcting environmental, health and safety issues.
  • Lead in the development of management systems, responsible workplace rules and innovative programs that provide risk-based safeguards for the workplace, community, and the environment.
  • Develop, adapt, implement, and administer EHS management systems, policies/procedures, and practices.
  • Strong presence on the plant floor required to drive improvements in all areas of EHS.
  • Able to work in a hazardous environment with chemicals, elevated work areas, and other physical hazards.
  • Able to work in various levels of PPE including wearing acid gear and breathing apparatus.
  • Perform environmental, health, and safety audits and develop action plans to correct deficiencies.
  • Collaborate with plant leaders to execute action plans. Conduct and develop others in incident investigation techniques.
  • Lead, develop, and provide direction to EHS staff and Employee Safety Committee.
  • Evaluate, develop, train, and lead emergency response teams and EOC team members. Act as the company representative with local emergency response agencies, LOPC, and other companies.
  • Represent the company with regulatory agencies, officials, professional groups, and civil organizations during inspections and events.

Analytical Ability/Problem Solving/Technical Skills

  • Excellent communication and presentation skills.
  • Strong leadership abilities.
  • Solid knowledge of EHS law, regulations, and standards to include OSHA, DHS, TSCA, CWC, OZONE, Wastewater & Air.
  • General knowledge of employment laws interrelated with Worker’s Compensation, Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA), and Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
  • Self-motivated with good interpersonal skills.
  • Computer knowledge is required, including proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, Outlook, and PowerPoint.

Requirements

Education and/or Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in safety, health, chemistry, biology, or a related field.
  • 7 years of experience in managing teams in safety, industrial hygiene, environmental issues, emergency response, hazardous materials and workers compensation in the high hazard chemical industry.
  • Safety-related professional qualifications and/or certifications preferred.
  • Emergency response leadership experience preferred.

Safety/Essential Functions

  • Must be capable of working with or without full acid gear as directed by applicable safety guidelines.
  • Must be able to evacuate the plant, reporting to appropriate assigned muster point, in the event of an emergency or drill.
  • Must be able to work in an environment where chemical odors may exist at permissible threshold limits of exposure.
  • Must be able to climb and descend stairs and ladders.
