What are the responsibilities and job description for the Estimator position at Halmar International?
Halmar International is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Estimator to support the preparation of cost estimates and competitive bids for heavy civil infrastructure projects. The Estimator will work closely with Senior Estimators, Operations, Engineering, Procurement, and Project Management teams to develop accurate project pricing, perform quantity takeoffs, solicit subcontractor pricing, and assist in the successful pursuit of public and private construction opportunities.
The ideal candidate will have experience in heavy civil construction, and a strong understanding of construction means and methods related to transportation, bridge, utility, marine, and infrastructure projects.
Responsibilities
Estimating & Cost Analysis
- Review plans, specifications, contracts, and other bid documents to determine project requirements.
- Perform quantity takeoffs for earthwork, concrete, structures, utilities, paving, and other construction activities.
- Develop detailed cost estimates for labor, equipment, materials, subcontractors, and indirect costs.
- Assist in preparing conceptual, budgetary, negotiated, and competitive bid estimates.
- Maintain accurate estimating worksheets, cost databases, and historical pricing information.
Bid Preparation
- Solicit and analyze subcontractor and supplier quotations.
- Review vendor and subcontractor proposals for scope completeness and compliance.
- Assist with preparation of bid packages, estimate summaries, and proposal documents.
- Support the completion and submission of bid proposals within established deadlines.
- Attend pre-bid meetings and project site visits as required.
Project Planning & Coordination
- Collaborate with Operations and Engineering teams to develop construction approaches and means and methods.
- Identify potential project risks, opportunities, assumptions, and exclusions.
- Assist in developing preliminary project schedules and procurement strategies.
- Support project handoff meetings following successful project awards.
Reporting & Administration
- Maintain organized project and estimating files.
- Track bid results and market pricing trends.
- Update estimating databases and productivity benchmarks.
- Assist in preparing management reports and estimate presentations.
Qualifications
Required
- Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, Engineering Technology, or related field.
- 2–5 years of estimating, field engineering, project engineering, or construction management experience within heavy civil construction.
- Ability to read and interpret plans, specifications, and contract documents.
- Strong mathematical, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent organizational and communication skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook, and Bluebeam.
Preferred
- Experience with heavy civil construction projects including:
- Bridges and structures
- Highways and roadways
- Utilities
- Marine construction
- Earthwork and site development
- Experience using estimating software such as HCSS HeavyBid, InEight, or Bid2Win.
- Knowledge of public agency procurement and bidding processes.
- Internship or field experience with infrastructure construction projects.
