JOB SUMMARY:

Sign Shop Crew Chief is responsible for managing the day-to-day operations of a sign shop, supervising staff, and performing sign-making and installation tasks. The role blends leadership, technical skills, and project management as well as maintaining effective working relationships with staff and public. Supports Supervisor in the daily activities in their absence.

ESSENTIAL
FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Participates in and oversees the work of road sign maintenance employees engaged in the review of signage requests or tasks (via phone, email, or tracking systems), assigns priorities, reviews scope of work and materials needed. Ability to have clear communication skills with the public and internal departments and coordinating with other state or local agencies while interpreting detour designs and road closures.

Operates computerized sign-making equipment, cut graphics from vinyl, and performs trade-specific tasks such as painting, installing, and repairing signs ensuring that all signage and graphics are produced to high standards and installed correctly.

Visit project sites to obtain sight distance/guardrail requirements, details and supervise installations in the field.

Ability to maintain daily work log of shop inventory, order materials, and ensure supplies are available when needed.

May assist in performing unskilled or semi-skilled labor such as installing signs and sign poles.

Ability to direct, train, and schedule subordinate crew members in the field while maintaining a safe work environment.

Performs other relevant work as assigned.

Regular and predictable attendance is required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED
:

Education and Experience:

High School Diploma or G.E.D.

One to three years of relevant experience in traffic control, sign installation, road maintenance. Specialized knowledge of traffic control devices, sign making, maintenance, or related field experience required.

MUTCD Guidelines:
A thorough understanding of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices to ensure signs meet national federal and state visibility and placement regulations.

Safety Certifications:
Require or ability to obtain American Traffic Safety Services Association (ATSSA) flagger or traffic control technician certifications.

Any equivalent combination of education and experience, which provides the minimum level of qualifications, stated above.

Licenses and Certifications:
Valid “Class C” Driver’s License and a satisfactory Motor Vehicle Record (MVR).

Post Certified Correctional Officer Required

Due to the safety-sensitive nature of this position, incumbents will be subject to random drug testing.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of the principles, practices, and techniques in maintenance of roads.

Knowledge of geography of the county.

Knowledge of preventive maintenance procedures.

Knowledge of the equipment and tools used in road maintenance and knowledge of applicable safety rules.

Knowledge of the pertinent laws and regulations related to road maintenance operations.

Ability to direct and oversee the work of a sign maintenance crew.

Ability to operate and maintain required machinery.

Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

Essential functions continuously require the ability to remain in a stationary position (sitting/standing); move oneself about the worksite by walking; ascend and descend ladders, stairs, and ramps; reach overhead; position oneself by crouching or kneeling; maintain body equilibrium to prevent failing when walking, standing, crouching or navigating narrow, slippery or erratically moving surfaces; push or pull items; repetitively use hands/arms/legs; grasp items; and move/transport items weighing up to 25lbs. Incumbents constantly must think analytically; handle stress and emotion, concentrate on tasks, remember names and other details; examine and observe details; make decisions, and adjust to change. Essential functions continuously require incumbents to direct others; maintain stamina during the workday; meet deadlines; operate equipment; and stay organized.

Essential functions frequently require the ability to bend body downward and forward by bending spine and legs, twisting at the waist, hips or knees; and move/transport items weighing between 26lbs and 75lbs. Essential functions frequently require incumbents to use math/calculations.

Essential functions occasionally require the ability to move oneself by crawling on hands and knees and move/transport items weighing between 76lbs and 100lbs. Essential functions occasionally require incumbents to be on-call; work irregular hours (i.e. nights and/or weekends); and attend work related meetings and trainings.

Sensory Ability:
Essential Functions require the ability to use effective verbal and written communication; and use of hand/eye coordination and fine manipulation to use tools and equipment.

Environmental Factors:
Essential functions are continuously performed with exposure to risk of bodily injury from hazards including chemical, sharp objects/tools, heavy machinery, and traffic; dirt/mud, fumes, gasses, odors, dust, grease and oil; moving mechanical parts; extreme noise; vibration; and wet, slippery floors/surfaces. Incumbents continuously must be able to work with others.

Essential functions are frequently performed with exposure to adverse environmental conditions, including inclement weather or dry environments; extreme hot or cold temperatures; risk of bodily injury from biological hazards; working in high heights/high places or constricted spaces; and hot temperature devices including burners and flame torches.

Essential functions are occasionally performed with exposure to risk of bodily injury from electrical hazards. Incumbents occasionally must be able to work alone.

Incumbents regularly must be able to work around equipment/machinery; drive county vehicles and other equipment; and walk on uneven ground.
