Position Title: Maintenance Specialist
Classification: Full-Time, Non-Exempt
Reports To: Facility Manager
Work Hours: Typically 40 hours a week, this position has varying working days and hours depending on scheduling needs including holidays.

The Facilities & Maintenance Specialist plays a vital role in upholding these standards by performing the daily maintenance and repair of all buildings, equipment, and vehicles. This team member ensures that all facilities operate reliably, safely, and efficiently to support lifesaving work. The role includes oversight of the warehouse and emergency supply organization, donation processing, and twice-weekly box truck driving for thrift store logistics.
Essential Duties and Functions
- Support and advocate for the mission, policies, and programs of the Halifax Humane Society.
- Perform daily maintenance, preventative upkeep, and safety inspections across all HHS properties, including the Main Campus, Redinger Spay & Neuter Clinic, and Thrift Store.
- Promptly address any facility-related safety hazards to protect people and animals.
- Organize and maintain warehouse storage and emergency equipment inventory in a clean, accessible, and efficient manner.
- Receive and organize donated goods for shelter and thrift operations.
- Coordinate and perform pickups and deliveries using organization vehicles, including box trucks, on a twice-weekly basis.
- Conduct minor plumbing, electrical, carpentry, and general repair work as needed.
- Install fixtures and new equipment when required; procure and transport materials for projects.
- Maintain the cleanliness, functionality, and professional appearance of HHS properties.
- Provide ongoing care and scheduling for fleet vehicles, ensuring readiness for operational needs.
- Maintain proper storage of pet food and supplies, ensuring protection from moisture, pests, and spoilage.
- Demonstrate a proactive, flexible, and collaborative approach, performing additional duties as assigned to support the organization’s goals.
Skills and Experience
- Hands-on experience in building and equipment maintenance, including general plumbing, carpentry, HVAC, and electrical systems.
- Familiarity with landscape and custodial needs.
- Ability to work independently and solve problems creatively, while also collaborating effectively with teammates.
- Excellent time management and organizational skills with the ability to multitask and prioritize.
- Positive, customer service-oriented attitude with strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Comfort working in physically demanding and fast-paced environments.
- General understanding of safe animal handling is a plus.
- Valid Florida driver's license with a clean DMV record (past 3 years) is required.
- Contract management experience and trade certifications are a plus.
Physical and Other Requirements
- Routinely lift and carry up to 50 pounds; occasionally lift and carry up to 100 pounds.
- Ability to walk, bend, reach, stoop, kneel, crouch, and work with arms overhead.
- Perform physically strenuous tasks in varying weather conditions.
- Work in environments with exposure to pets, cleaning agents, construction materials, and noise.
- Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.
- Availability by phone or text when off-site in case of urgent facility needs.
Mental Demands
Must have the ability to multi task, prioritize and handle high levels of stress. Position requires excellent organizational skills, as well as high level of accuracy and attention to detail. Must be dependable, have proven ability to meet deadlines and follow detailed instructions without need of constant support.
