What are the responsibilities and job description for the Controller position at Hakes Brothers LCNM, LLC?
The Controller has the fiduciary responsibility of enforcing the operating procedures and policies established by Hakes Brothers. Key responsibilities:
Financial Close, Consolidation, and Reporting
- Own the monthly/quarterly/year-end close calendar; ensure timely, accurate financial statements and management reporting.
- Lead consolidated reporting across entities/divisions (including eliminations, intercompany, and standard package reporting).
- Oversee account reconciliations and balance sheet integrity; implement disciplined review/approval controls.
- Prepare/oversee reporting packages for leadership, lenders, investors/board, and other stakeholders as needed.
Homebuilding Accounting Leadership (Technical Operational)
- Ensure consistent application of homebuilding accounting policies across divisions (inventory/WIP, land acquisition and development, spec vs. sold homes, cost capitalization, warranty reserves, impairments, etc.).
- Provide technical accounting leadership for complex transactions (e.g., revenue recognition, joint ventures, purchase accounting, and other non-routine items).
- Partner with operations and division leaders to improve financial discipline, forecasting accuracy, and key metrics (gross margin, SG&A, ROI/inventory turns).
Controls, Compliance, and Audit
- Design, implement, and maintain strong internal controls and accounting policies/procedures; ensure adherence across corporate and divisions.
- Lead external audit coordination and internal audit support; drive timely remediation of findings and process improvements.
- Ensure compliance with applicable federal/state/local requirements and company standards.
Treasury/Banking and Working Capital (as applicable)
- Oversee key banking activities and cash controls in accordance with company policies; support cash forecasting and working capital management.
- Oversee borrowing base, syndicated facility, and covenant compliance.
Team Leadership and Cross-Functional Partnership
- Lead, coach, and develop the accounting organization (corporate and/or shared services), including recruiting, performance management, and capability building.
- Act as a liaison between corporate and divisions on accounting/finance matters; standardize best practices and training.
Systems, Process Improvement, and Scalability
- Own accounting systems governance and reporting tools; drive automation, controls embedded in workflows, and ERP enhancements/conversions.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance (required).
- 5–10 years of progressive accounting experience (public accounting and/or corporate); homebuilding strongly preferred.
- Strong working knowledge of US GAAP, internal controls, and financial reporting.
- Proven people leadership experience (building teams, coaching, holding deadlines/standards).
- Advanced Excel and accounting systems proficiency; experience with enterprise tools (e.g., IHMS MarkSystems, Hubspot, etc.) is a plus.
Preferred Qualifications
- CPA (active or inactive) strongly preferred.
- Multi-division/multi-entity consolidation experience; joint venture (JV) accounting experience.
- Experience scaling controls/processes in a high-growth environment; SOX-readiness experience (if applicable).
