What are the responsibilities and job description for the Construction Specialist position at Habitat For Humanity of the River Valley?
Habitat Construction Specialist
Habitat for Humanity of the River Valley – Huntsville, AL
Full-Time | Tuesday–Saturday
Build homes. Support the team. Make a difference.
If you have spent years fixing things, maintaining property, working with tools, working in the trades—or you're simply the person everyone relies on to make sure things get done—this may be a great fit.
Habitat for Humanity of the River Valley is looking for a dependable, hands-on Habitat Construction Specialist to join our construction team.
This role is an important part of keeping our construction and home repair work moving. While you'll work on Habitat homes and assist with construction and repairs, much of your job is making sure the people doing that work have what they need—tools, materials, supplies, equipment, an organized job site, and an extra set of capable hands when needed.
You don't have to be a master carpenter or construction expert. We value practical experience, reliability, common sense, organization, a strong work ethic, and a willingness to learn.
What You'll Do
- You'll work closely with our Construction Manager, Project Coordinator, construction staff, and volunteers to:
- Make sure construction and repair teams have the tools, materials, supplies, and
- equipment they need to keep projects moving
- Deliver and move tools, materials, and supplies between Habitat properties and job sites
- Help organize, maintain, and keep track of construction tools, equipment, and supplies
- Prepare job sites and assist with setup and cleanup
- Help keep job sites safe, organized, clean, and ready for the next day's work
- Secure job sites, tools, trailers, and Habitat properties at the end of the workday
- Assist construction staff and volunteers with homebuilding, rehabilitation, repairs, and
- warranty work as needed
- Safely use hand tools, power tools, and other equipment
- Drive Habitat vehicles and pull trailers as needed
- Help maintain Habitat properties and vacant lots, including mowing, weeding, cleanup, and debris removal
- Work alongside volunteers with different levels of construction experience
- Notice what needs to be done and pitch in wherever needed to help the team stay productive
What We're Looking For
We're looking for someone who is dependable, practical, organized, flexible, and takes pride in helping a team work well. This could be a particularly good fit for someone with experience in construction, home repair, maintenance, facilities, landscaping, warehousing, the trades, property upkeep, or another hands-on field.
You don't have to know everything about building a house. What's more important is being comfortable around construction, knowing your way around tools and materials, being able to anticipate what a crew may need, and being willing to jump in and help.
We value experience, dependability, good judgment, and people who know how to get things done.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Valid driver's license and driving record that meets Habitat's insurance requirements
- Ability to safely drive different types of vehicles and pull trailers
- Basic knowledge of tools, materials, and equipment preferred
- Construction, home repair, maintenance, or similar hands-on experience preferred, butnot required
- Ability to perform the physical duties associated with construction and property maintenance
- Ability to organize supplies and manage multiple priorities
- Good communication and people skills
- Ability to work respectfully with staff, homeowners, and volunteers from a variety of backgrounds
- Dependable and able to adjust as project needs change
- Availability to work Tuesday through Saturday, with occasional evening or additional weekend needs
- Support for the mission of Habitat for Humanity of the River Valley
- Background check and drug screening are required

Why Work for Habitat?
This is more than a construction job.
You're part of the team that makes building possible. When materials arrive where they're needed, tools are ready, job sites are organized, properties are maintained, and volunteers and construction staff can focus on the work in front of them, you've done an important part of the job.
You'll work with a small team, solve different problems from one day to the next, stay active, and see the results of your work firsthand.
If you're looking for steady, hands-on work where being reliable, resourceful, and helpful matters, we encourage you to apply.
