POSITION: Habitat America seeks a strong, professional full-time Accountant.
Position Title: Accountant
HOURS: 40 hours per week – FULLTIME
Hybrid work schedule: minimum 3 days in office, 2 days work from home optional

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:
A four-year bachelor's degree in accounting is desired. However, a minimum of an associate's degree in accounting is required.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- 2 years accounting or bookkeeping experience desired
- Excel proficiency is a must
- STRONG data entry proficiency
- Good interpersonal and communication skills
- Yardi software experience a plus
- Accuracy and attention to detail is a must
- Excellent communication skills required, both verbal and written
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES OF THIS ROLE:
Core Staff Accounting Duties:
- Enter journal entries into the accounting software
- Prepare and record accruals, deferrals, and prepaid entries
- Ensure that reversing entries occur accurately and timely
- Conduct monthly reconciliation of bank accounts
- Perform periodic reconciliations of mortgage accounts to ensure accuracy
- Prepare and issue financial statements for Controller review
- Maintain an orderly accounting filing system
Portfolio Oversight Responsibilities:
- Oversee day-to-day accounting for an assigned portfolio of properties
- Ensure timely and accurate monthly close for each property within the portfolio
- Review property-level financials for accuracy, completeness, and variances
- Work closely with property managers to resolve accounting issues and ensure proper expense coding and reporting
- Monitor cash activity, operating budgets, and reserve balances across assigned properties
- Assist in preparing financial reporting packages for property owners and stakeholders
Assistant Controller–Level Responsibilities:
- Support the monthly, quarterly, and year-end close processes
- Review general ledger activity and identify discrepancies or unusual variances
- Assist in financial statement analysis and provide variance explanations
- Help improve accounting processes, internal controls, and workflow efficiencies
- Assist with audit preparation, including gathering schedules and supporting documentation
- Provide backup support for key accounting functions (AP/AR, cash management) as needed
- Assist in ensuring compliance with company policies, GAAP standards, and regulatory requirements
Additional Duties:
- Assist with assembly of information for owners, investors, and regulatory entities
- Assist the Controller with special projects
- Special projects, as necessary
