What are the responsibilities and job description for the Engineering Intern, Robotics / Software (Fall 2025) position at HABIT?
HABIT deploys on-demand robotic labor to you — and to restaurants, hotels, stores, and farms in your neighborhood.
We’re backed by Y Combinator (X25) and work in person at our office in El Segundo, just south of the Los Angeles Airport close to the beach.
We’re looking for a Robotics / Software Engineering Intern to build autonomous systems that operate outside of the lab. This is a chance to contribute to the early development of robots that interact with physical environments, real customers, and actual constraints.
Responsibilities
You’ll work alongside our co-founders and founding engineers on core autonomy challenges in a fast-moving environment. As an intern, you will:
- Work closely with the team on autonomy, perception, and control challenges
- Build and test real-time ROS 2 components in live environments
- Integrate sensors and mobility hardware on new robot prototypes
- Collect, debug, and analyze field data to improve robot performance
- Contribute to a system that will be deployed live during your internship
Required Qualifications
- Currently pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree with a graduation date between December 2025 and June 2026.
- 3 months of work/internship experience in the technology sector
- Proficiency in ROS 2 from projects, research, or coursework
- Python experience and familiarity with robotics libraries like rclpy, nav2, tf2, or OpenCV
- Experience with embedded systems and autonomy stacks
- Some proficiency working in C codebases
Desired Qualifications
- Experience with mobile robots or robot perception pipelines
- Familiarity with CAD tools for mechanical prototyping
- Background in computer vision or multimodal sensor fusion
- Interest in service robotics or human-robot interaction
- Contributions to robotics research or open-source projects
Additional Requirements
- This position is 100% on-site in El Segundo, CA — no remote option available
- Unfortunately, we are unable to provide visa sponsorship at this time
- Must have a valid U.S. Driver’s License
- Willingness to work extended hours or weekends as needed to hit milestones
Internship Information
- Duration is flexible (August start date is preferred, with potential for extension or return offers)
- Interns are fully embedded in our engineering team and contribute to production systems from day one
