Position Overview
The Drafting Process Technician supports manufacturing development, process optimization, and continuous improvement initiatives by creating and maintaining technical drawings, coordinating process trials, testing samples, documenting results, and developing standard operating procedures (SOPs). This role acts as a key link between engineering, production, quality, and other functional teams to ensure efficient operations, high-quality output, and the successful implementation of process enhancements.
Key Responsibilities
1. Drafting and Technical Support
- Create, revise, and maintain detailed technical drawings (mechanical, layout, tooling) using CAD software (AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Inventor).
- Translate design concepts and specifications into accurate drawings that meet functional, safety, and industry standards.
- Maintain organized and updated drawing files with version control to ensure quality and accessibility.
- Support the design and fabrication of custom tooling for production equipment.
2. Process Trials and Optimization
- Plan, organize, and execute process trials to evaluate new materials, processes, and equipment.
- Monitor and adjust process parameters to achieve desired outcomes.
- Collaborate with engineering, production, and quality teams to ensure trial success.
- Collect data, analyze trial results, and recommend process improvements using Lean/CI methodologies such as A3 problem solving.
3. Testing, Analysis, and Quality Assurance
- Collect and prepare samples for testing during trials and production.
- Conduct tests, analyze data, summarize results, and provide feedback to enhance process performance.
- Perform process and product audits to verify compliance with specifications and standards.
- Identify deviations and propose corrective/preventive actions to improve quality and efficiency.
4. Documentation and SOP Development
- Accurately document trial procedures, observations, and results according to company protocols.
- Prepare detailed reports summarizing findings and recommendations.
- Develop, review, and maintain SOPs to ensure consistency and clarity across manufacturing operations.
- Create process flowcharts and visual aids to support operational standardization.
5. Continuous Improvement & Collaboration
- Support and contribute to continuous improvement projects aimed at reducing waste, increasing efficiency, and enhancing product quality.
- Work cross-functionally with engineering, quality, production, and supply chain to resolve issues and drive improvements.
- Recommend technical and/or process changes to improve manufacturability and operational efficiency.
- Promote a culture of safety, quality, and continuous improvement throughout the facility.
Qualifications
Education:
- Required: Associate or bachelor’s degree in engineering, CAD/Technical Drafting, or a related STEM field.
- Preferred: Lean six sigma green belt
Experience:
- Preferred: 3 years of CAD drafting experience with AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or Inventor.
- 3 years experience conducting process trials, testing, data analysis, and SOP creation.
· Proven work history leading small to medium sized projects yielding cost savings and production improvements.
- Familiarity with ISO9001:2015 or other regulated QMS standards.
- Experience with Lean Manufacturing/Continuous Improvement practices is a plus.
Skills & Competencies:
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Visio).
- Ability to manage multiple tasks with attention to detail.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Collaborative, self-directed, and results-oriented.
- CAD/technical drafting experience.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to work in a manufacturing environment, including standing for extended periods.
- Regularly lift/move up to 25 lbs., occasionally up to 50 lbs. with assistance.
- Work involves exposure to production equipment, materials, and occasional chemicals.
