H.W. St. John & Company is a full service Customs House Broker located in Valley Stream, NY which is only 15 miles from JFK airport. We are an in-house international freight forwarder and logistics specialist. We have been setting service standards in importing and exporting since 1902. Customs Compliance/ Data Entry -Import
Customs Compliance: Ensuring that our company adheres to international trade and customs regulations for imports, concerning all the New Trump Regulations. Responsible for classifying goods, managing valuation, conducting file audits. Key skills include extensive knowledge of customs laws, strong analytical and communication abilities, and proficiency with customs software.
Data Entry - Work directly with customers and OGA such as F &W, USDA, EPA, FDA to complete complex entry processing based on government regulations. Requires the ability to work alongside the client to help streamline the customs clearance process and track deliveries per the client’s instructions and to their satisfaction. Oversee and provide customers of potential problems in their import process and provide cost- effective solutions. The ideal candidate would have experience in the customs brokerage/ freight forwarding industry and would have excellent customer service skills, strong organizational and interpersonal skills. Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills and be able to manage well under stress. This position entails being a team player.
Duties and Responsibilities include:
- Daily auditing of files to make sure that proper HTSUS sequence (99 numbers) are used upon transmission to U.S. Customs.
- Manage and process entries (approx. 300-400 entries/month)
- Monitor and interpret tariff changes, customs regulations and new up and coming trade compliance updates.
- Work directly in Cargo Wise to manage data entry and processes
- Duty payments to U.S. Customs after auditing file to make sure it adheres to the new regulations
- Create and distribute written procedure for handling each account, including classification, valuation, customs and OGA requirements
- Qualified in operational clearance of Air import shipments in compliance with U.S. Customs regulations, FDA, USDA, F & W, and EPA, perishables, etc.
- Staying current with import regulations and be able to relay any changes back to the client
- Responsible for performing A to Z operations
- Maintain effective relationships with project managers, carriers, forwarders and Customs
- Communicating with our overseas agents to insure seamless movement of cargo
- Tracking and tracing freight movement with airlines and trucking companies to ensure on time delivery
- Review and monitor any customs rejections, CF 28 Request for information and other correspondence
- Actively pursue new sales leads by discussing our various services that we offer
- Inform customer via e-mail or phone on any up-dates on pending shipment in a timely manner
- Ability to respond to customer and overseas agents on rate quotes in a timely fashion
Qualifications
- 5-10 years of related experience in international trade
- Cargo Wise is required
- Strong Knowledge of HTS classification, CBP regulations and OGA
- High School Diploma Required. BA/BS preferred
- Highly developed organizational and interpersonal skills
- Ability to analyze and prioritize tasks and projects, must be organized
- Efficiently solve inter-company and customer issues and be able to respond promptly and professionally.
- Ability to classify goods in the harmonized tariff schedule, have an understanding of Customs regulations, protests, binding rulings.
- Must be detail oriented, thorough and accurate.
- Experience with drawbacks
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
- Ability to work with demanding deadlines
- Proficient in Microsoft office, excel and other technical software is required
- Experience with Cargo wise is preferred
- Be knowledgeable in ADD/CVD
