About the Role:
The Environmental Field Technician I is an entry-level field position based out of our Signal Hill, CA office. Day-to-day work involves traveling to project sites across Southern California to collect soil vapor, air, soil, and groundwater samples in accordance with state and federal guidance, H&P’s certified Standard Operating Procedures, and our Quality Assurance Program.
Field days are typically 8 to 10 hours and involve local travel, professional interaction with clients, property owners, and regulators, and both independent and team-based work. Some projects involve assisting on a direct push drill rig. This role requires physical stamina, attention to detail, and a strong sense of personal responsibility. The data you collect matters.
H&P provides full training on sampling techniques and our SOPs. What we cannot train is attitude. We are looking for someone who shows up prepared, communicates clearly, and takes ownership of their work.
Responsibilities:
- Collect soil vapor, air, soil, and/or groundwater samples from field sites across Southern California
- Perform sampling independently using manual field equipment, or assist as a helper on a direct push drill rig
- Maintain accurate, legible field records and documentation in accordance with H&P’s SOPs and QA program
- Perform hand augering, equipment decontamination, and general maintenance of work vehicles
- Interact professionally with team members, clients, property owners, and regulatory representatives
- Apply math skills in the field, including basic calculations and unit conversions
- Maintain and care for field equipment between deployments
- Assist with other field and office tasks as needed
The ideal candidate will bring:
- Genuine curiosity about environmental science and a desire to learn soil vapor sampling and environmental data collection
- A personable, professional attitude when working with teammates, clients, regulators, and property owners
- The ability to work independently with confidence and initiative, and cooperate effectively as part of a team
- Excellent record-keeping skills and consistently legible handwriting
- Solid math skills, including basic algebra
- Schedule flexibility, as early start times, occasional out-of-town work, and weekend assignments do occur
- Residence in or near the Signal Hill/Long Beach area
- OSHA 40-hour HAZWOPER certification (preferred; training can be provided for the right candidate)
Requirements:
- High school diploma or equivalent required; college coursework or a degree in environmental science, geology, chemistry, or a related field is a plus
- Clean driving record for 3 years, required; MVR will be verified
- Valid driver’s license
- Ability to lift 50 lbs and perform sustained physical labor in outdoor environments
- Professional fluency in English, written and spoken
- Ability to pass a background check and pre-employment drug screen
- Willingness to travel up to 25% (local and regional)
Compensation:
$23–$25/hour for entry-level candidates, commensurate with experience and qualifications. Compensation grows as skills and responsibilities develop.
