What are the responsibilities and job description for the Plant Manager position at H&L Manufacturing?
About Us
H&L Manufacturing builds custom wire harnesses and cable assemblies for customers in several industries such as appliance, automotive, agriculture, industrial equipment, medical, and more. Every harness we ship must be built right, because our customers count on it to work in their products. We believe good people and good systems make that possible. We invest in our team, and we promote from within whenever we can.
The Role
We’re looking for a Plant Manager to lead our production floor and help our team hit its goals for safety, quality, and on-time delivery. This is a leadership role first. You’ll set the tone on the floor, support your supervisors and crew, and keep things running smoothly day by day.
We aren’t looking for someone with 20 years in the chair. We’re looking for someone with solid leadership instincts, hands-on production experience, and a real desire to learn. We have proven systems and processes, and we’ll train you in them. If you’re ready to grow into a bigger role, we want to hear from you.
What You’ll Do
- Lead, coach, and develop production supervisors and team members, building a culture of accountability, respect, and teamwork.
- Oversee daily production so orders ship safely, on time, and to spec.
- Learn and apply our operating systems, then help the team follow them consistently.
- Keep safety at the center of every decision, and make sure the plant meets all safety requirements.
- Uphold our quality standards, including workmanship standards, crimp checks, and electrical testing, so defects are caught before anything leaves the building.
- Track key numbers like output, scrap, rework, downtime, and labor hours, and use them to spot problems and improve.
- Work closely with engineering, scheduling, purchasing, quality, and shipping to keep work moving.
- Solve problems as they come up and look for ways to keep them from coming back.
- Help with hiring, training, and onboarding new team members.
What We’re Looking For
- Experience leading people, whether as a supervisor, team lead, shift lead, or another setting where you were responsible for a team.
- Experience in a production or manufacturing environment, ideally with hands-on assembly work.
- Strong communication skills, and the ability to be both firm and fair.
- A problem-solving mindset and a willingness to roll up your sleeves.
- Comfort using basic computer tools (email, spreadsheets, and production or inventory software).
- A genuine interest in learning, taking feedback, and growing with the company.
Nice to Have (Not Required)
- Experience in wire harness, cable assembly, or electrical/electronics manufacturing.
- Familiarity with IPC/WHMA-A-620 (the industry’s standard for wire harness workmanship) or similar quality standards.
- Experience with lean manufacturing, continuous improvement, or similar approaches.
- Experience using AI tools (such as ChatGPT, Claude, or Copilot) to work smarter, for example to summarize production data, draft reports or work instructions, or look for patterns in quality problems.
- A degree or certification in business, manufacturing, or a related field.
