The Director of Junior Programming at H-E-B Tennis Center is seeking an assistant for helping on court with the junior programs.

GOAL

The goal is for H-E-B Tennis Center to continue to improve its tennis offerings while improving the skills of its coaches and players. The goal is for the environment to be fun, competitive, educational, and inspirational. We would like to attract new players and retain the ones we currently have.

H-E-B Tennis Center currently has 22 outdoor courts and 3 covered courts. The large amount of courts allows for catering to a lot of players and offering large programs.

Tennis is a difficult sport to learn how to play and to coach. Despite that, there is lots of opportunity as coaches to continue to work together to encourage, mentor, and inspire the young players and to build champions that can thrive in competitive conditions with the high performance players.

TEACHING

The assistant would help with group and private lessons. The amount of work and type of work given is subject to evolve as the coach's abilities expand.

OTHER

Although the main focus of the role would be for on court coaching, the assistant may be needed to help with outreach, running tournaments, contacting parents and players, moving equipment, etc.

SCHEDULE

The group lessons run year around in the evenings on weekdays and during the day on weekends. You will also work during camps in the mornings throughout the year, primarily in the summer. Private lessons may also be scheduled at your own accord.

Private lessons will accumulate as players request lessons and as schedules allow.

The assistant may need to attend scheduled meetings.

The assistant will need to be able to work during holidays if there are any groups being offered at those times.

EXPERIENCE & SKILLS

Tennis Playing & Competing

It is preferred that the assistant have several years of experience playing tennis in a school, tournament, group lessons, and/or private lessons environment with a minimum USTA rating of 4.0 or UTR rating of 6 .

Tennis Coaching

It is preferred that the assistant have a minimum of one year experience coaching but it is not required. The junior programs director helps to teach his pros about coaching to level up their coaching skills.

The assistant will need to be able to implement the requested drills and activities that the director is requesting for that day or those lessons.

The assistant will need to be able to implement knowledge and skills that they have gained from fellow coaches and various coaching programs on the court. The assistant will need to continually grow their tennis coaching knowledge and skills.

They will need to be able to improve in watching a player hit the ball and be able to tell what about the stroke, footwork, form, method, grip, etc. needs to be changed and why.

They will need to be able to demonstrate and explain instructions such that it is understandable and appropriate for the age and skill level specific to player need.

They will need to be able to tell when a player's technique is worthy of positive feedback, when it needs constructive advice, and how often to offer this feedback.

They will need to be able to feed balls where they can place them appropriately and with appropriate speed, timing, spin, positioning, etc. for the needs of the activity and player.

They will need to be able to time the activities such that they are suitable for the length of the class.

The warm-ups, stretching, drills, explanations, games, etc. must be suitable and beneficial for a tennis class with paying customers.

The assistant will need to be okay with the pressure of parents watching, quick lesson plan changes, and unforseen situations.

Interactions

It is preferred that the assistant display enthusiasm, confidence, and respect on and off the court for their coworkers, students, and parents. The assistant will be needed to offer support and be a positive role model for children to be around. The assistant is not to try to suggest to a student taking a class or lesson that their offering is better while another coach is giving that student a class or lesson.

The assistant will need to be able to appropriately and respectfully respond during misbehavior from students and or when dealing with difficult parents. The assistant will need to discuss with the director as these situations arise before dealing with them. Players that are bullying other players will need to be corrected in a skillful, instructional way that is sensitive to all involved and as deemed appropriate by the director.

Any outreach or interactions with community members on behalf of the facility or program will require discussion with the director beforehand.

The assistant will need to be in communication with the director on all concerns, proposed ideas, needs, schedule changes, groups, private lessons, hours worked, class attendees, etc. or as directed by the director.

The assistant will need to quickly respond to getting appropriate help for emergencies needing medics, police, etc.

The assistant will need to be sensitive to court positioning such that players are not looking in the sun, if avoidable, during explanations, and such that the sound of the coach's voice is loud enough that players can hear them but not to the degree of excessiveness. The assistant will need to be sensitive to the weather conditions such as if there is stormy weather or excessive heat and appropriately react such as moving to the covered courts (if agreed on by the director) or indoor lounge, having the kids take water breaks, asking how the student is feeling if showing signs of over exhaustion, illness, or injury, etc.

Physical Demands

The assistant will need to be able to maneuver a large basket of balls, stand for long hours, and endure excessive heat or cold weather. Various cooling gear is encouraged to be worn or used during the hot months. (Gear can be provided.)

COMPENSATION

Compensation is to be offered at an hourly rate.

Rates will be determined based on qualification.

Bonuses may be offered for completing continuing education and during busy summer months for year round employees.

ATTIRE

The assistant will need to wear appropriate tennis clothing attire that is suitable for being a role model around children. This includes tennis court shoes, tennis shorts, tennis shirts/polos, and tennis hats if needed. Any hats will be worn forward at all times.
