We're looking for an experienced Heavy Civil Excavation Estimator who understands what it takes to build a successful project — from the initial takeoff and bid preparation to the equipment, manpower, production rates, and costs involved in getting the work done.

What You'll Do
Estimating & Bid Preparation
- Prepare detailed, accurate, and competitive estimates for excavation, grading, earthwork, site development, and underground utility projects.
- Perform quantity takeoffs using Bluebeam or comparable estimating software.
- Develop comprehensive estimates in HCSS HeavyBid, including labor, equipment, trucking, materials, subcontractors, and production costs.
- Review construction drawings, specifications, bid documents, and site conditions to identify project requirements, risks, and opportunities.
- Solicit and evaluate vendor and subcontractor pricing to ensure competitive and complete bids.
- Prepare bid proposals, supporting documentation, and final bid submissions.
Job Costing & Project Performance
- Work closely with project managers, superintendents, and field leadership to evaluate production rates, equipment utilization, and project costs.
- Compare estimated costs and production assumptions against actual job performance to improve future estimates.
- Support project budgeting, cost forecasting, and estimating-to-operations handoffs.
Project Planning & Team Collaboration
- Participate in pre-bid meetings, site visits, and bid reviews.
- Collaborate with leadership on bid strategy, project opportunities, and overall project feasibility.
- Build and maintain positive working relationships with subcontractors, vendors, suppliers, and clients.
- Work directly with operations personnel to ensure estimates reflect realistic field conditions and construction methods.
What We're Looking For
Required Qualifications
- 3–5 years of estimating experience in heavy civil construction, excavation, grading, earthmoving, or site development.
- Strong working knowledge of HCSS HeavyBid.
- Experience with digital quantity takeoffs, preferably using Bluebeam.
- Solid understanding of heavy equipment production, labor costs, trucking, materials, and construction methods.
- Experience developing production-based estimates and analyzing job costs.
- Ability to interpret civil construction drawings, specifications, and bid documents.
- Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple bid deadlines.
- Effective communication skills and the ability to collaborate with field operations and management.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with HCSS HeavyJob.
- Experience estimating underground utility construction and complex site development projects.
- Familiarity with Kansas City-area heavy civil construction practices, subcontractors, and suppliers.
