Entry Level Geologist/Scientist

GZA
Somerset, NJ Full Time
POSTED ON 4/28/2026
AVAILABLE BEFORE 6/28/2026

GZA is currently seeking an Entry Level Geologist/Scientist to support our growing environmental consulting practice in Somerset, NJ. As an Entry Level Geologist/Scientist, you will perform a mix of field and office duties on a fast-paced team of highly experienced professionals and subject matter experts. Field assignments will vary from 1-day deployments to those that last 3 weeks, depending on project needs. However, each assignment will generally be in New Jersey or New York, and you will return home on a daily basis. You will be mentored by seasoned professionals, who will in turn look to you to be curious, responsive, and to share ideas. Our success relies on this collaborative environment.

Between field assignments, your work will involve a mix of working in a professional office setting, preparing detailed and accurate field documentation, data analysis, and reporting, and preparing for the next field assignment.

Key Attributes:

  • Self-motivated to work independently - because you will frequently be out in the field collecting data and we need you to take control of the body of work that you are responsibility for.
  • Comfortable dealing and working with people in a professional manner - because you will interact with all kinds of other people (colleagues, subcontractors, clients, other stakeholders) and for us, people and relationships matter.
  • Comfortable with working with both low and high-tech environmental field equipment - because our technical practice area utilizes the latest sophisticated data gathering technologies, simple tools, computers, and communications devices. (Note: we will train you on this equipment, but we need someone with an aptitude for working with instrumentation.)
  • Flexible and responsive - because we are a client-focused professional services firm that aims to delight our clients. That means that our schedules and plans change based on our client needs. That also means we have to be responsive to their needs, in terms of providing our services as efficient and nimbly as possible.
  • Reliability because we need a team member that we can count on to operate within a dynamic professional services firm.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform a variety of field work under the supervision of highly experienced professionals and subject matter experts. Our field work often involves site assessments and the collection of soil, water, air, and sediment samples.
  • Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot field equipment and instrumentation.
  • Conduct Site visits to observe and document conditions.
  • Review various types of laboratory data.
  • Conduct basic technical analyses/calculations associated with the data collected.
  • Write field memos, draft technical reports, and e-mails.
  • Communicate proactively, effectively, and efficiently with team members.
  • Prepare and follow Site-specific health & safety plans

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in geology, earth/environmental science, or related field required.
  • Strong oral and written communication, problem solving, and organizational skills.
  • A valid driver’s license in good standing.
  • OSHA 40Hr HAZWOPER Certification (preferred)
  • Some heavy lifting is required.

The base salary range for this position is $60,000 – $70,000 depending on experience and capabilities which will be assessed during the interview process.

About GZA:

  • Professional development and a focus on continued education and learning (including tuition reimbursement).
  • Flexible work environment.
  • Small firm feel with a larger firm reputation and resources.
  • Mentorship from experts in the industry.
  • Generous, company-subsidized benefits package, including medical, dental, vision, and 401k retirement plan.
