Key Responsibilities
Patient Assessment & Preparation
- Perform comprehensive nursing assessment (history, allergies, medications, NPO status).
- Verify informed consent is signed and matches procedure.
- Confirm site marking and conduct pre-op checklist.
- Review labs, diagnostics, and medical clearance.
- Start IV lines and administer pre-op medications.
- Educate patients and family about procedure and post-op expectations.
- Assess fall risk, infection risk, and anesthesia risk.
- Post op recovery of patients
- Discharge patients once stable to home
- Follow infection control protocols.
- Participate in QI studies under the direction of the QI director.
- Maintain current NYS RN license
- Complete documentation according to accreditation standards.
- Serve as patient advocate while under anesthesia.
- Perform surgical time-out verification.
- Ensure correct patient, procedure, and site.
- Maintain sterile field integrity.
- Conduct instruments, sponge, and needle counts with scrub tech as needed.
- Document intraoperative events in real time.
- Monitor patient positioning to prevent injury.
- Coordinate with surgeon and anesthesia provider.
- Manage specimens (labeling and transport).
Qualifications
Required
- Current RN license in the State of New York.
- Preferred:
- Experience in orthopedic, neurosurgical, and pain management procedures.
- Knowledge of AAAHC, CMS, and NYS DOH regulatory requirements.
- Minimum 3–5 years of perioperative nursing experience in an ASC or hospital surgical setting.
- BLS and ACLS certification (or ability to obtain within 90 days of hire).
