Academic Deans are the chief administrative officers of their respective division(s). They are responsible for strategic leadership, external/community & student relations, curriculum planning/compliance and appropriate programmatic accreditations, personnel & resources, budget and assistance with institutional advancement, and student success analysis, and planning. Completes other duties as assigned. 

Strategic Leadership- Vision & Strategic Planning: Develop a five-year vision for unit to include educational programs, academic services and/or student service offerings, staffing-facilities needs, and projected budget. Provide a time line and proposed outline for implementation and development.

Oversee the coordination of personnel, curriculum, schedules, resources and data to meet the needs of the school and enhance the educational effectiveness of programs and services,
Participate in strategic and long-range instructional planning for the college.

Recommend instructional and general policies, conduct meetings to facilitate planning and collegial decision-making and to keep staff informed about issues and projects for the overall college instructional program.

Maintain current knowledge of new trends and innovations in community colleges and higher education.

Promote excellence in teaching, advising; facilitate dual enrollment, non-credit curriculum pathways, instructional agreements, and academic guided pathways.

Foster excellence and innovation within area of responsibility; develop partnerships that promote the colleges mission and advance shared college and community goals.

Provides individualized faculty support as needed. Provides initial school orientation and assignment of mentors to new faculty members (conduct second interviews with all new faculty members). Conduct at minimum annual school meetings and an appropriate number of department head/APD meetings throughout the year. Develop a semester calendar of events with the assistance of faculty/staff for the division (i.e. pinning ceremonies, advisory board meetings, student activities, etc... )

External/Community Affairs & Student Relations- Participate in external relation activities (i.e. panel discussions, community boards, keynote speaking). Communicate with leaders in the private and public sectors and in educational agencies to determine needs for new courses and programs.
Facilitate academic partnerships between division faculty and four-year transfer institutions; assure maximum course articulation for students.

Facilitates the resolution of student concerns, issues, complaints, and grievances for the school. Maintains documentation of the concern, etc. Based on issues (disability accommodation, student behavior, etc...) refer student to appropriate departments.

Facilitate student requests as appropriate (i.e. course schedule changes, re-enrollment in course, etc...). Oversee and evaluate requests for: credit by exam, course waivers, and other student petitions.

Engage students throughout the year through purposeful events (i.e. award ceremonies, town hall meetings, and other student engagement activities).

Curriculum Planning and Compliance/Programmatic Accreditation- Work with faculty to plan for curriculum additions, modifications, and deletions; set priorities for resource needs; provide program analysis (Program Sustainability & Viability)

Ensure compliance with accreditation and regulatory requirements and ensures accurate information in publications of curricula and programs of study for the school.
Facilitate maintenance of relevant curriculum appropriate to the college mission and garner information from advisory boards (i.e. attend meetings on rotation).
Work with faculty to identify and implement learning outcomes and program review. Facilitate academic partnerships between school faculty and Early College.

Ensure preparation of a schedule of classes to meet the needs of students and work with staff to produce accurate schedules, catalog information, program information and multi-year instructional plans.

Monitor schedules, faculty and staff workload for accuracy throughout the semester. Assure accurate and timely attendance reporting for all courses offered in the school.

Ensures achievement of learning outcomes assessment in all school programs. Read and provide feedback to program APRs and ensure all annual assessments measures are placed into college selected software system accurately and on time. Ensure all other academic, school, and school deadlines are adhere to (i.e. final grades, State Tech reporting deadlines, etc... )

Personnel & Resources- Conducts annual performance a(bi-annual as needed) assessment for direct reports utilizing data and input provided by employee. Also conduct classroom evaluations of selected faculty members annually. Serves as rater for annual evaluations of direct reports and reviewer for individuals reporting to department heads.

Develops individualized faculty improvement plans as needed based upon faculty rating by students, student retention, identified strengths and weaknesses, and goals for enhancing performance

Ensure adjunct and dual enrollment in-class observation take place and are documented with feedback to instructors. Recruit and develop adjunct faculty pools.

Supervise and evaluate the performance of assigned staff; interview and participate in selecting employees; orient, train, counsel, discipline and terminate personnel according to established policies and procedures. Communicates policy and/or procedure changes to school members.

Respond to staff, adjunct and faculty complaints. Adhere to all policies, procedures related to grievances, unlawful complaints and discipline.

Budget/Resources & Institutional Advancement- Develop and manage the school budgets consistent with college policy and sound financial management principles.

Work with OIT, Finance and VP to find cost saving opportunities throughout academic operations.

Ensure that equipment assigned to the school is accounted for through the college's inventory system. Develop and maintain a prioritized list of equipment needs resulting from either growth or deterioration/obsolescence of existing equipment.

Identify and prioritize school needs, secure available funding, and strategically allocate and re-allocate resources.

Confer with faculty regarding ideas for program improvement to find resources for development through grants and special projects. Work with the GTC Foundation to secure donors as well as IR/IE Department to review federal and state grant opportunities.
