REPORTS TO: AREA MANAGER
POSITION: HOURLY NON-EXEMPT
Description
This position saws logs for maximum value recovery by following daily cutting orders and achieving proper levels of yield.
Overview
This role offers hands-on experience in the lumber industry and serves as a critical step towards becoming a fully qualified sawyer. You will be trained in the use of specialized equipment, safety protocols, and the methodologies used in sawing logs for maximum value. Your ability to learn quickly, attention to detail, and commitment to quality will be key to your success in this role.
Responsibilities
Operational Excellence:
Operate the carriage, feed works, and log turner to ensure accurate and efficient sawing.
Follow starter instructions for the band mill and feed works during start-up.
Conduct daily inspections of equipment, promptly reporting any issues to Mill Management or Maintenance.
Communicate regularly with filers about saw performance and address any concerns.
Quality Control
Check lumber thickness during saw changes and report inconsistencies.
Avoid damaging the saw by exercising caution when cutting logs.
Minimize punishment to the carriage and reduce waste from heavy-ended logs.
Ensure logs are securely dogged and monitor the quality of work to achieve maximum grade recovery.
Training & Reporting
Train relief Sawyers on operational procedures and best practices.
Record log counts accurately and complete all required production reports.
Identify and address any miscut lumber with the operator.
Maintenance & Housekeeping
Assist with light maintenance tasks as needed.
Maintain a clean and organized work area, adhering to all housekeeping standards.
Physical Requirements
Capable of lifting boards weighing between 25100 lbs.
Ability to climb stairs, and perform frequent twisting, turning, and bending.
Safety
Must Wear Personal Protective Equipment, Including
Safety glasses
Hearing protection
Head protection
Steel toe work boots
Skills Required
Any other protective gear as required
Must be 18 years of age or older.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Willingness to cross-train in various positions, be self-motivated, and work effectively as part of a team.
